Pattern of the Week: Undulating Lines Sweater

The words “classic sweater” get bandied about quite a bit in the knitting world, but sometimes you happen upon a sweater design, and it just IS CLASSIC. Such is the case with the Undulating Lines Sweater from Wool Studio Vol. VI.

Stella Egidi’s design incorporates one of my knitting trifectas: traveling stitches, stockinette, and folded hems.

What can I say about traveling stitches, except let me count the ways? Don’t worry, I won’t get too effusive. The Undulating Lines Sweater takes the versatile circular-yoke construction and adds a gorgeous pattern of traveling stitches. The clever usage of the traveling stitches also incorporates the yoke shaping; such an impressive design! I also love the yarn choice, Mountain Meadow Wool Alpine, in the Natural Cream colorway. The light shade really shows off the traveling stitches beautifully.

Nobody loves stockinette more than I (well, I love it a lot), and it’s the perfect match to the textural yoke in this sweater. Stella used short-rows in the stockinette body to add the curves you need to make the Undulating Lines Sweater fit perfectly.

I am a huge fan of folded hems, and Stella used them not only at the bottom hem, but at the cuffs. Such a tidy, pretty finish.

Undulating Lines is a must-make for me. How about you?

Pattern Details

FINISHED SIZE 36 (40, 443/4, 48, 523/4, 551/4)” circumference at underarm. Pullover shown measures 36″; modeled with 4″ of positive ease.

YARN Mountain Meadow Wool Alpine (100% Merino-Targhee wool; 255 yd [233 m]/31/2 oz [100 g]): Natural Cream, 5 (6, 6, 7, 8, 8) skeins.

NEEDLES Size 5 (3.75 mm): 16″ and 32″ circular (cir). Size 6 (4 mm): 24″ and 36″ cir and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS Markers (m); stitch holders; tapestry needle.

GAUGE 20 sts and 30 rnds = 4″ in St st on larger needle; 24 sts and 35 rnds = 4″ in charted patt on smaller needle.
