Pattern of the Week: Alongshore Cardigan

The fall issue of knitscene is here, and it features Sarah Kelliher’s must-knit Alongshore Cardigan. It’s sturdy, drapey, and stylish—a great layering piece for fall and beyond.

Layering is the key word for fall in my neck of the woods (Spokane, Washington), and also at the Interweave headquarters in Fort Collins, Colorado! We have warm-ish days and cool nights, so I always take a sweater or wrap with me. I’ve been caught short and had to wrap up in my yoga towel; lesson learned.

I love these sorts of sweaters: half-cardigan, half stole, all cozy and chic.

The texture here is made from the allover diagonal scallop stitch. At first glance, I though it was moss stitch, but it’s much more interesting. The stitch pattern is worked over four rows, with two of them being straight-up purl rows. A super-easy stitch that packs a great textural punch.

The yarn is another thing that drew me to this pattern. Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok, which I’ve used several times and love, is a durable, earthy yarn that comes in myriad gorgeous colorways.

Because Woolstok is worsted-weight, you can start now and be wearing Alongshore by fall. (And wearing it along shore would be perfection in the autumn months!)

Pattern Details

FINISHED SIZE Size 20 (21¾ , 22¾, 23¼ , 24¼)” back width at underarm. Cardigan shown measures 21¾ ” on model with 34″ bust.

YARN Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok (100% fine highland wool; 370 yd [338 m]/5¼ oz [150 g]): #1302L Gravel Road, 8 (9, 9, 9, 10) skeins.

NEEDLES Sizes 6 (4 mm) and 7 (4.5 mm): 32″ circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS Markers (m); stitch holders; tapestry needle.

GAUGE 25 sts and 34 rows = 4″ in Diagonal Scallop st on smaller needle.
