Knitting Splendor: Luxury Fibers Pattern Collection

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

There is nothing quite like knitting with luxury fibers. The first time I knit with cashmere—a rare treat—I was over the moon. The yarn’s softness and warmth almost bowled me over.

Of course, luxury fiber tends to be a bit on the pricier side. And while I would love to be knitting cashmere sweaters all the time, luxe fiber is often better suited to smaller accessories. You’ll get more bang for your buck, reveling in the luxury of cashmere, silk, and more without breaking the bank.

To that end, we’ve pulled together five of our favorite patterns for luxury fibers. These dainty accessories are perfect for that special skein of bison or alpaca you’ve been saving. Indulge in some deliciously soft yarn this winter with these stunning projects.

Luxury Fibers Pattern Collection

Arctic Headband

Worked in extra warm qiviut from Musk Ox Farm, the Artic Headband by Kate Scalzo is deceptively light for how much heat it retains. Qiviut, the undercoat of musk oxen, is harvested in only a few places in the whole world and must be hand-combed out of their coats!

Andes Mitts

Fingerless mitts are great patterns for errant skeins of yarn, and the Andes Mitts by Sherrie Kibler are no exception! Worked in Amano Yarns Ayni, a luxury fiber blend of baby alpaca and mulberry silk, the cluster lace pattern of these super soft mitts creates an alluring, touchable texture.

Paihamu Hat

Have you heard of the brushtail possum? This invasive species has negatively impacted the natural ecology of New Zealand. However, their fur creates a gorgeous luxury fiber, and that has given some yarn manufacturers a creative solution: population control through yarn. The Paihamu Hat by Jennifer Miller Comstock capitalizes on the softness of Zealana Air Lace, a blend of brushtail possum, cashmere, and silk, to create a truly luxury beanie.

Oslo Walk Shawl

The Oslo Walk Shawl by Susanna IC is a delicately beaded beauty. Worked in a luxury, lace-weight blend of alpaca, silk, and cashmere, the shawl drops beads among the lace to give the shawl an almost frosty appearance. Cast on at the bottom edge and create this beautiful shawl for special occasions and summer nights.

Devonshire Beanie

This hat has been a #goals pattern of mine for a couple of years now. The Devonshire Beanie by Mone Dräger uses Lang Yarns Cashmere Light, a luxury blend of 88% cashmere and 12% nylon for strength. The hat’s cabled band is worked first, before picking up stitches on either side of the panel to work the brim and crown.

My yarn for the Devonshire Beanie.

This year, at long last, I plan to take on this hat. I had one skein of Cashmere Light already in my stash, so I bought three extras in colorway 28 Vintage Rose. I’m planning on making it for my sister’s birthday, but the yarn is so delicious, I might end up keeping it for myself.

I hope this pattern collection inspires you to seek out your special skeins of luxury fiber and, at long last, make something beautiful with them. Share your favorite luxurious accessories with us in the comments, and as always,

Happy Knitting,
Julia
