knitscene Winter 2019: Tales from Behind the Camera

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

I don’t usually see the garments from our magazines on a human being until the day of a photo shoot. It’s true! The morning of a photo shoot, rather than heading into the office, I usually pack up my laptop, go get a coffee traveler (a necessity on such mornings), and head to wherever we happen to be shooting that day. There’s a frenetic energy in the air as we all—me, my editor, designer, stylist, models, photographer, etc.—get ready to show off the garments to their best advantage. And, for the first time, I get to see the pieces on a real human being.

I really love being behind the camera as photos get taken. I get to see how garments drape and fall, how gorgeous they can be when styled together. I had no idea that the Rosslyn Cardigan was so swingy until I saw it being photographed. So, today, rather than simply wax poetic about how lovely the knitscene Winter 2019 pattern are, I thought I might bring you some stories about each of the pieces, directly from our photo shoot in the fall.

The Loop Hooded Cardigan by designer Bonnie Franz

This was one of my favorite pieces. I love the variegated green yarn in which the piece was knit, as well as the cozy hood. Perhaps the funniest part of the shoot was figuring out an appropriate piece to pair those ENORMOUS glasses with. They worked stunningly well with this chic sweater.

The Grape Compote Pullover by Estefania Espindola

Who doesn’t love pockets in their sweaters? This cowl-necked pullover was a particular favorite during the shoot, both for how comfortable it is and for how well the color popped against our background.

Occasionally, someone will say something hilarious behind the camera, and every so often our models end up laughing uproariously. The resulting photos are always a delight.

The Pomegranate Cardigan by Danae Smith

The other thing a photo shoot does is allow me to appreciate just how much knitting goes into creating a piece. The Pomegranate Cardigan is impressive to look at, not only for the stunning length but also for the knotted cable that runs up the back of the sweater.

All of the individual knitscene Winter 2019 patterns are now available for purchase in our store! Every pattern in this issue has something special to offer, and I certainly hope you have as much fun knitting them as we did photographing them.

Be sure to count your stitches!

Julia
