Knitscene Accents: Periphery Shawl

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

Knitscene Accents was inspired by the knitscene Accessories special issues that Interweave printed from 2012–15, which was then reprised in 2016 as knitscene Handmade. We hadn’t done an accessories-only issue in a few years, so we wanted to explore that again. Along with having the pleasure of planning the projects and photography, I had the privilege of adding another design to my repertoire: the Periphery Shawl.

My main focus with the Periphery Shawl was to create a super-basic but easily-wearable that had just a touch of quirkiness. The end result is a simple triangular shawl with a row of double-yarnover stitches about every eight inches. Thick tassels on each corner help weigh the shawl down so that it stays in place when you wrap it. It’s worked back and forth in rows beginning on the wide edge and decreasing to the point. The fabric is soft and drapey, thanks to the double-yarnover sections.

Five evenly spaced rows are double-yarnover rows, which are dropped on the next row to create the open look.

I’m really happy with the way this project—and the issue it’s in—worked out. The photography is fun and light and the projects shine.

Which project from Accents are you knitting?
