What You’ll Need

To get ready for this event you’ll need a copy of the Ancient Gemstones Shawl pattern designed by Lana Jois, yarn, and needles. That’s it! We’ll be guiding you every step of the way from there.

The Ancient Gemstones Shawl calls for 3 skeins of Ancient Arts Yarns Passion 8 and U.S. size 4 circular needle. We recommend using ChiaoGoo’s 24” RED Lace™ needle. The stainless-steel tips make working the shawl’s star stitch and slip stitch patterns a breeze.

The colors selected for this shawl were inspired by a unique gemstone. Photo by Kerry Bogert.

Crazy Lace Agate inspired the colors selected for this shawl. We love the way the speckled yarn creates a soft dappled effect while the two solid colors have bold, high-contrast moments. You can get the kit for these colors and other custom palettes directly from Ancient Arts! If choosing yarns from your stash, look for a light solid color, a light yarn with darker speckles, and a darker solid color.

Special Thanks to Our Sponsors

This knit-along is brought to you by our wonderful sponsors, whose products were used in the creation of the Ancient Gemstones Shawl. We’d like to say a special thanks to Ancient Arts Yarns and ChiaoGoo for making this unique event happen!

  1. Hi. I have not been able to submit to the KAL forum so here my update. I started in early April but haven’t had much time. I used my yarn stash. At first I chose a grey blue, white and speckled yarn from beige to brown to light grey/blue and darker blue but the solid and speckled together didn’t work very well after the star st, so I swapped to brown.

  2. I’m starting the KAL today! Hopefully I can finish by the end of the month I found 2 kinds of yarns I purchased when I went back to Japan last summer. Hopefully it’ll turnout time be beautiful!

  3. I’m not in a position to buy more yarn right now, but I was wondering if it was possible to do this shawl with DK weight rather than sport weight? I have several skeins of Mineville Wool Project Merino DK that I could use. Please let me know!

    1. Hey Maria!
Using yarn from your stash is a great idea! If you use DK-weight instead of the recommended yarn, your gauge will likely change. Not a bad thing! It just means your shawl may be a different size and use a different amount of yarn than the pattern suggests. If you’re comfortable with substitutions like this, I say go for it.
