5 Mittens to Knit This Winter

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

Winter approaches and my fingers are not prepared! I’ve been fantasizing about owning (and using) hand-knit mittens and I think it’s finally time that I got around to making a pair. Thankfully, Interweave Knits Gifts is a staple of inspiration for fall and winter knitting. These selections reflect our 2018 issue selections. Which of these projects will have you casting on?

mittens to knit

1. Blue Spruce Mittens by Donna Kay

Delve into some decadent, traditional colorwork with the Blue Spruce Mittens! They’re inspired by classic Latvian mittens and trap extra warmth thanks to the stranded double layer. If yellow and green aren’t your colors, Jamieson & Smith 2 ply jumper weight comes in a large array of colors.

2. Candlelight Mittens by Meghan Jones

Wear your Candlelight Mittens on chilly winter strolls or for marshmallow roasting in late fall! The bright yellow symbolizes the welcoming glow of a warm home on a chilly night. Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift comes in a stunning array of colors inspired by the natural landscape of Shetland—go see what color-stories you can create!

3. Long Johns Mittens (Hat and Mittens Set) by Rebecca Blair

If you’re new to colorwork or simply looking for a relaxing pair of mittens to work on this winter, consider the Long Johns Mittens! Brooklyn Tweed makes some stunning yarn and Interweave Knits Editor Hannah Baker told us all about her recent visit! If the set strikes your fancy and you can’t wait to cast-on, it’s available in a kit!

4. Fraser Fir Mittens by Laura Hulslander

A beautiful herringbone pattern that mimics fir trees hits the spot for winter-inspired (but not too holiday) mittens you can wear through both fall and winter. These elegant mittens are stranded and worked in the round with an afterthought thumb.

5. Changing Diamonds Mittens (Hat and Mittens Set) by Mone Dräger

Featuring a gorgeous colorwork pattern that you can wear all year, the Changing Diamonds Hat and Mittens Set is a great project to make for yourself or someone else. It’s a great first colorwork project and Brown Sheep Company Nature Spun Worsted is a wonderfully priced yarn, meaning you won’t feel guilty about wearing this set every day.

6. (BONUS) North Star Flip-Top Mittens by Shelby Goddard

Get the best of both worlds with the North Star Flip-Top Mittens! This slip-stitch colorwork pattern is inspired by Art Deco-era sunburst mirrors—updating a classic design feature. Use the mittens to protect your fingertips from the cold, and easily convert them to mitts when you want to dig for keys or use your phone!

What’s your go-to mitten pattern? How does it stack up against these beauties?

Happy knitting,

Sarah
