4 Summer Hats to Beat the Heat

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

What does one knit during summer? This is an ongoing conversation, and one that can go in all sorts of directions. Some folks knit the same things that they knit any other season of the year. For instance, I just finished a wool sweater in June. However, I think I’m done with my wool-knitting for the season. It’s time to do some quick, light projects that I can keep on my lap.

Hat knitting is the way to go. You finish hats quickly and they aren’t too bulky to carry. Knit several over the summer and then you have an inventory of gifts for later on. You can do the same with socks and other small projects, but hats are one-and-done, and each one you make can be different.

Knitscene Summer 2019 includes four awesome hat patterns that are perfect for summer knitting. They are all pretty different from one another in style, fiber content, and technique, which diversifies your summer-hat knitting. Which one will you knit?

1. Sweet Spot Hat

This cute hat starts with a garter-stitch brim and then the spiral is created by bias stripes that are worked throughout to the crown. The pattern calls for a cotton-blend yarn that comes in a wide range of bright colors.

2. Diadem Effect Beret

This woolen beret pairs a classic silhouette with basic embroidery techniques to create a beautiful night-time firework scene on a fabric canvas. The pattern includes instructions on how to make the simple embroidery stitches, so you can make this hat even if you’ve never embroidered before.

3. New Growth Hat

This pom-pommed hat also incorporates some embroidery stitches to create a beautiful floral effect on the front. It uses a sturdy merino-blend yarn in fingering weight, just right for summer knitting.

4. Mended Heart Hat

This cute hat is part of a set with a pair of socks. Both the hat and socks feature a very simple embroidery that can be used for visible mending and decoration alike. It’s knit with a merino-blend sport-weight yarn and has a double-thick brim. Perfect hat knitting in the summer and wearing in the fall!

These are the hats of knitscene Summer 2019. They vary in style and technique and level of concentration required, and there are so many more hats out there. Which will you choose for your hat knitting this summer?
