3 Helpful Tips for Using a Jeweler’s Saw

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

Most jewelers find sawing to be a relaxing, meditative practice once they master the basics. Using a jeweler’s saw requires precision and practice to achieve accurate cuts in various materials. In her Artful Metalsmithing workshop series, instructor and metalsmith Julie Sanford shares tips for many jewelry making techniques including using sawing.

Before starting, make sure the blade is properly tensioned by adjusting the saw frame’s tension screws. A loose blade can lead to wobbling and inaccurate cuts, while an overly tight blade can lead to blade breakage. Be sure to wear safety glasses when cutting metal.

Here are Julie’s top three tips for using a jeweler’s saw. Check out her techniques in this quick video that’s just a taste of what you’ll learn in her new Artful Metalsmithing video workshop collection.

Aren’t those great tips? You’ll learn so much more in the full video about making an open box pendant, and in the complete workshop series.

Tips for Successful Sawing & Piercing

Attach your bench pin at the proper height. Sit at your bench or worktable with both feet flat on the floor and very straight posture. Adjust your bench pin to chest level. Having the workpiece at the right height allows you to maintain better control over the jeweler’s saw to make accurate cuts and it provides fatigue as you work.

Keep your saw frame straight. Don’t allow your saw blade to drift side to side, which will cause blade breakage. Listen carefully to the sound your sawing makes, it should sound smooth and consistent as your blade moves straight up and down.

Use the right amount of pressure. You want nice, gentle pressure with a little bit of forward movement without pushing. If you apply too much pressure, your metal will jump around, and your saw blade will make a choppy line. Let the blade’s teeth do the work—guide the saw with a gentle, controlled motion.

Remember that precision comes with experience, so don’t get discouraged if your first attempts aren’t perfect. Start with simple projects and gradually work your way up to more intricate designs. Over time, you’ll develop the skills you need to create intricate and accurate cuts using a jeweler’s saw.
