JMD: What do you wish someone had told you when you first starting creating your Etsy shop?
Lorelei: The common perception on Etsy is that once the shop is open, it's going to be an instant success. Although I wasn't sure of this when I decided to open a store, I didn't realize it was going to be several months before I actually sold something, and it was to a close friend, not even just a regular Etsy buyer. I would have benefited greatly if someone had told me, be patient because it's going to take a while before you start building a customer base. There are so many other angles that you have to work to make an Etsy shop successful. Self-promotion is one of the most important tools.
JMD: Other than the obvious-jewelry sales to make money-what do you feel is the most important reason a jewelry maker should have an Etsy shop?
Lorelei: Starting an Etsy shop will teach you how to run a business. There are so many things I have learned over the past several years, such as what I need to offer customers in terms of customer service. I've learned also that there is a lot to be said for a shop owner who ships items in a safe and timely manner. It teaches discipline in many ways. Over the years just being a shopper on Etsy, also, teaches a business person how they want to operate the store and how they want the listings to look. In many ways, you have to become very self-motivated, to turn your online shop into a profitable and attractive storefront. Learning to photograph jewelry in the best light will be a challenge and eventually will become extremely important in the success of your shop.
JMD: What is your favorite part about having an Etsy shop or selling your jewelry on Etsy?
Lorelei: Two reasons really! I love selling my jewelry on Etsy because it has helped me form very solid relationships with other sellers and buyers, too. AND, it has never been easier to run an online business. Having a storefront on Etsy means that you won't have to fuss much with it, in terms of knowing a lot about HTML and web language. Therefore it's a really fantastic place to start out.
