Favorite Project of the Week: Wire Wrapped Gem Shades
“Whoa. Those are seriously awesome.” Those were the exact words that went through my mind when I laid eyes on these fabulous Wire Wrapped Gem Shades by Naomi Hinds. They first appeared in the August 2012 issue of Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist magazine with a detailed step-by-step tutorial on how to wire wrap your own pair.
I have several friends who love cosplay, I can imagine them in their fairy costumes now. The only thing they’re missing are these beauties! Naomi used watermelon tourmaline slices, but you could use any gem slice that’s clean and does not cause visual distortion.
Here’s what you need to make you own pair of Wire Wrapped Gem Shades:
- 24 gauge square wire
- 24 gauge half round wire
- Tourmaline or gem slices of your choice
- Needle nose pliers
- Flush cutters
