Out of This World: Celestial Beading Projects

Oh, my stars! March is upon us, which means that we are mere weeks away from the Spring Equinox. Use your favorite beading stitches to create jewelry worthy of celestial events that are happening around us. The sun will cross the Northern part of the equator, marking the beginning of spring and longer days of sun for those of us above the equator.

For those of us below the equator, we can expect the arrival of autumn. While it may be easy to forget, the sun is not just a giant ball made up of gases, but also a shining star that brings light and warmth to the world. It is only natural to pay homage to such a beautiful event with something just as perfect, beaded jewelry.

Netting, Picot and Fringe Beading Projects

While we may become easily distracted by the beauty that spring brings us, it is important that we do not forget the real star of the show, the sun! These Stellar Earrings, created by Agnieszka Watts involve netting, picot, and fringe techniques, making this an intermediate beading project. The design features dark tones but can be easily changed to warm shades which would make these evoke the sun.

Circular Peyote Stitch and Circular Netting

If you find yourself stargazing, this Wish Upon a Star bracelet, designed by Debora Hodoyer, is for you. This bracelet features varying sizes of shaped beads and seed beads. Wish Upon a Star uses circular peyote stitch and circular netting techniques. To make this design truly out of this world, combine metallic and luster beads along with a circle clasp, reminiscent of Saturn’s rings. 

St. Petersburg and Peyote Stitch

Perhaps space doesn’t attract your attention, but sunsets do. The Evening Sky Collar, created by Jennifer Airs, combines alternating colors of beads, such as the amber citrine crystal bicones with deep shades of blue. This work of art is recommended for advanced and expert bead workers, and although it may be a challenging project, it is truly worth it to be able to wear such a stunning, heirloom-worthy necklace.

Carole Ohl’s creation, the Saturn Connections bracelet, marries simple yet eye-catching pewter seed beads with metallic and polychrome beads. The muted matte blue rings, made to represent Saturn’s rings, are beautifully designed and make the polychrome beads appear as if they are in orbit. This bracelet is ranked as an intermediate beading project and requires circular herringbone stitch and ladder stitch techniques to complete.
