Busy Hands, Happy Heart in the Latest Issue of Beadwork

We beaders know that making something with our hands can calm our mind and lift our spirits. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of getting into the zone and completing a beautiful piece of jewelry. Nicole Vogt’s Prismatic Cuffs on the cover of the August/September Beadwork provide the perfect opportunity to find your Zen.

The August/September issue of Beadwork was produced during the time of stay-at-home orders. Even though some of us already worked remotely, we’ve become proficient at video conference calls and other ways to work together despite being physically apart. You’ll probably notice a few things that are different about this issue. For example, we held photo-shoot sessions off site, which made it necessary to experiment with a variety of backgrounds. We’re happy with the result and hope you enjoy it, too.

Inside This Issue of Beadwork

There are more beginner-friendly projects than usual in this issue, including the charming Tea & Croissants bracelet by Bead Artist Kim Leahy. Kim loves doing bead embroidery and other more intricate designs, but she loves a quick make for those times when you’re looking for (almost) instant gratification. We also have five projects that will inspire you to dive into circular stitches, including Leslie Pope’s dramatic Playful Paisleys.

We’re impressed by all the ways our beading community is providing extra inspiration right now. Former Beadwork Editor Melinda Barta wrote Bead Buzz about three beaders who are giving back to the community through free online instruction. Plus, our own Tamara Honaman is sharing videos from her home studio, and shops such as Cool Stuff contributor AllegoryGallery.com are using their time to add exciting new offerings.

This issue’s Fast & Fabulous collection features seven dramatic designs featuring wire elements that are easy to make. Anne Perry’s Metamorphosis features fun, eye-catching spirals made from card holders. Plus, I made a pair of memory-wire hoop earrings using double-terminated quartz, but the technique will work with any beads in your stash.
