Throwback Thursday: Beadwork Magazine 10 Years Ago

Ten years ago, Beadwork magazine was undergoing a lot of exciting changes. In the February/March 2009 issue, we had a new editor in Melinda Barta, we began the Designer of the Year program, and Katie Hacker introduced her column “Katie’s Beading Secrets.” I love that so many people from then continue to be involved with the magazine. It shows a dedication to something we truly love and want to share with the beading community.

I flipped through the Feb/Mar 2009 issue of Beadwork magazine and picked out some of my favorite designs that have withstood the test of time.

Alchemist’s Treasure Necklace

With two sparkling crystal pendants nestled inside herringbone bead caps and many exciting twists of patterned crystal fringe, Scarlett Lanson’s stunning spiral-stitched necklace will be treasured as pure design alchemy.

Ellipse Necklace

Marcia DeCoster’s elegant necklace draws visual power from the strong geometry in its curved and layered right-angle-weave pendant. I love the geometric beadwork movement happening right now, and this piece would fit right in with the newest designs in that field.

Casual Cocktail Ring

Molly Schaller’s attractive circular-square-stitched ring is easy enough to finish in an afternoon but elegant enough to wear that evening for a night on the town. And, the bohemian feel of these rings is still totally in fashion.

Beadwork Then and Now

The beading world sure looks different now than it did in 2009. All of the beautiful shaped beads have revolutionized and reinvigorated bead weaving and beaded jewelry in a really exciting way. It’s pushing designers and bead weavers into new creative territory, and I feel more inspired than ever!
