The ocean is calling and inviting me over. I can’t make it right now, so instead will create. For me, creating is the next best thing to satisfying the need for calming waters and the sounds that soothe my soul. Thankfully, finding inspiration for bead weaving projects is easy thanks to the contributors of Beadwork magazine.

In Scarlett’s Style, Scarlett Lanson seems to be saying “Let’s go sailing!” With a combination of a few stitches she really brings that anchor to life. She doesn’t stop there!

The anchor is incorporated into a beautiful handmade beaded chain with some great asymmetry. I can see wearing this on a yacht with a flowy white dress. And, I can see myself on deck during cocktail hour as we speed through the ocean heading toward our next port, the cares of the world unable to touch us. (I’ve never been on a yacht nor do I own a flowy white dress but I do watch a lot of television and can conjure up some vivid images!)

This Springtime Collaboration Necklace by Lorelei is inspired by spring, and the mix of materials brought together skillfully. The cool colors, soft tones, and matte finish take me to the beach. Maybe the day is overcast, the ocean a little choppy thanks to a westward breeze skimming across the surface. There’s a need for a sweatshirt but the colder days near the ocean often bring the most contemplative moments and greatest clarity.

The base of the Sparkling Waves bracelet design is memory wire! I find that so fascinating and freeing. You can sculpt this design to be anything you want, working within the limitations the strength of memory wire imposes, of course. You can also use any color seed beads for a myriad of effects.Sparkling Waves Bracelet, Shelley Nybakke, Beadwork Oct/Nov 2010

In the main color of Shelley’s Sparkling Waves bracelet, I can see the ocean shining as the sun hits the surface and can almost feel the sea spray and hear the bubbles as the wave rolls up the sand and filters out.

No matter your mood, the time of year, or what your mind’s eye sees—you can create it with bead weaving projects.
