Yarn Spotlight Addition: Summer 2011
|In the Summer 2011 issue of Interweave Crochet, we put the Yarn Spotlight on crochet threads. Here are three more bonus threads, as well as an image of all the threads lined up in the same motif so you can compare gauge.
All motifs are from 150 Knit & Crochet Motifs by Heather Lodinsky (Interweave 2011). Motif number is given in each summary.

|Aunt Lydia's Classic Crochet Thread
Size 10, Content: 100% mercerized cotton Put-up: 3.5 oz / g 350 yd/320m Solids Construction: 3 ply Care: Machine wash gentle cycle, warm water, no bleach, rinse well and promptly remove. Roll in towel. Block. Color: Maize #423 Hook: E4 (3.5MM) motif: 61 (Coats & Clark)
This very reliable thread works up with just the right amount of stiffness-there's no struggle with either softness or overly sturdy thread. It blocks well, resulting in a project with lots of body. White and ecru come in 400 yards balls; the 53 colors come in 350-yards balls for solid and 300 yards for shaded.
Perfect for: doilies, bedspreads, tablecloths, keepsake crochet, some garments
|DMC Pearl Cotton Variations
Size 5 Content: 100% mercerized cotton Put-up: 54 g / 1.90 oz/ 27.3 y / 25 m Construction: two-ply Care: machine wash cool, no bleach, tumble dry medium, iron medium Color: wheat fields 4075 Hook: C-2/2.75 mm Motif: 61
Sold in skeins for embroidery and cross-stitch, this over-dyed thread is perfect for wee motifs that can be joined for a radiant look. Try combining the overdyed colors with solids for another colorful look. It crochets beautiful with zero standing of its tight two-ply.
Perfect for: Keepsake crochet pieces, small garments or accents on garments.
|Aunt Lydia's Bamboo Crochet Thread
Size 3 (Coats & Clark) Content: 100% viscose from bamboo Put-up: 2.6 oz/ 75g, 150 yd/137m Construction: 5 ply Care: Machine wash gentle cycle, warm water, no bleach, rinse well and promptly remove. Roll in towel Color: old gold 619 Hook: D-3 / 3.25 mm Motif: 8 popcorn circle (Rnds 1-3)
This bamboo thread is a bit challenging, with a tendency to slide liquidly off its cardboard tube as you wrangle the five-plies into submission. The somewhat loose plying leads to some stranding. That said, once you find the right hook (don't attempt to use a hook smaller than called for), you can proceed without incident quite nicely for some time. The resulting fabric is soft and very wearable. Available in eight colors.
Perfect for: garments, round tablecloths, cafe curtains and other home décor with drape
