Yarn Pop 2022: A Fiber-Arts Salute to the Sea

Closeup of the Yarn Pop 2022 yarn mural

A whimsical fiber-arts salute to the sea is the soul of Yarn Pop 2022. It’s on display through May 31 in seven sites around the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, and we hope you are able to check it out! If not, here’s a look at the highlights. It’s such a fun way to connect the community as we come out of lockdowns and seek out a new normal in our daily lives.

Jenn and Paul Bernard, owners of Plymouth Harbor Knits joined with the Plymouth Bay Cultural District to put out the call to knitters, crocheters, and felters. More than 100 people responded, sending 400-500 sea creatures, fiber takes on seaweed, sand, and rocks—even an alluring mermaid.

It was a "commuknity" effort, with knit-alongs at the shop, a local bookstore, and school class projects.  Fiber artists as far flung as Las Vegas, and as young as five years old sent in their contributions. Volunteers gathered at the local community college over several days to assemble the pieces. Crochet shells, handknit fish, felted kelp, and more were mounted on racks covered with hundreds of ocean-and-sand-colored squares.

Funding from the cultural district, sponsors. and support from the town provided yarn for volunteers. The town helped with flatbed trucks to help move and set up the displays. A map of the displays, docents at the main display downtown, and a workbook scavenger hunt for children to identify sea creatures in the displays are part of the pop.

“By the Sea” is the second Yarn Pop for the Berhards. Their first project was in 2021, when the project was designed as a gentler yarn bomb to celebrate emerging from the pandemic, using a springtime theme of flowers.

“It’s a fun way to create community, to be creative, to promote fiber arts,” Jenn Bernard said, who has owned the shop, steps away from Plymouth Harbor and many of Plymouth’s historical sites, for five years.

We absolutely love this idea as a way to connect with the community as we recover from the global pandemic. This community never ceases to amaze and inspire us!
