Do you have visitors headed your way for the holidays? Get your house decked out for the holiday season with these yarn-inspired DIY Christmas decorations. Let me know which of these ideas you’ll try first in the comments below!
1. Make a holiday garland.
There are a lot of fantastic ways to create holiday garland from leftover yarn. Make a garland of pom-poms! Try finger crochet! Attach a bunch of crochet motifs that look like snowflakes! Find tutorials on how to make 3 types of yarn garlands.
2. Create a St. Nick Pom to hang on the tree.
Try this tutorial for making a pom-pom that looks like Santa’s round belly. Kids will love this project and it makes a perfect ornament to hang on the tree.
3. Crochet some Christmas ornaments.
Leftover yarn will come in handy if you want to make this collection of Christmas ornaments. With 25 Christmas decorations in this pattern collection, it will be tough to decide where to start!
4. Learn how to make the cute Merry Moose.
Everyone loves a holiday moose! Grab this fun DVD to learn all of Megan Kreiner’s secrets for cute amigurumi projects plus the pattern instructions for this cute moose. He looks good just about anywhere in the house and is ready for the holidays!
5. Create some holiday throw pillows.
The quickest way to change up your normal décor for the holidays is to add a fantastic throw pillow. Crochet one in holiday colors and you’re all set! My favorite is the Polaris Pillow.
6. Crochet a train set.
This train set is adorable. It will look fantastic circling around the bottom of your Christmas tree! Work the set in holiday colors, embroider some holly berries, put a tree on the caboose and you will have your very own crochet version of the Polar Express!
7. Crochet a wreath for your front door.
The Wonderland Wreath from Love of Crochet Winter 2017 will look great hanging on your front door. It’s got a wintery look without overdoing the Christmas angle, so you can leave it up long after the holidays. Be sure to check out the rest of this issue for many more ideas for DIY Christmas decorations!
8. Decorate with some crochet plaid.
I love using red and black buffalo check plaid to decorate for Christmas. The Woodcutter’s Vest from Interweave Crochet Winter 2018 explains how to work this plaid pattern. Practice on the vest, then incorporate it into some of your own crochet holiday décor.
9. Try a crochet afghan in holiday colors!
A holiday-themed afghan is so wonderful for the holidays! Cuddle up with it by the fire on Christmas Eve or drape it over your lap as kids rummage through their stockings. All you need is yarn in seasonal colors. Try making the Chevron Bedspread holiday themed! Find the pattern in Interweave Presents Favorite Crochet Blankets.
10. Make some Christmas-themed mandalas!
By now, you know we can’t get enough crochet mandalas here at the Interweave office. I love making these for my home. Make a mandala rug in Christmas colors or with a side opening to serve as a tree skirt. Or grab your holiday-colored yarn and make a Christmas-themed Mandala Wall Hanging!
BONUS IDEA: Bake yourself some sweater cookies.
Ok . . . cookies are not made out of yarn, but sweater cookies sure do remind us of yarn! You’ll love having these cookies around to munch on (and Santa will, too). Find the recipe and info you need to make crochet sweater cookies in Love of Crochet Fall 2017.
