7 Crochet Projects for Back to School

back to school
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

It’s that time of year again! For so many years of my life, I LOVED preparing to go back to school. I was so excited to reunite with friends, stock up on notebooks and pencils, shop for new clothes, and crochet myself something to impress my classmates. Although I’ve left my school days behind, I can still think of many fantastic projects to make in preparation for going back to school.

Whether you’re a student looking to crochet something in your new school’s colors, an empty-nester with newly-discovered free time, or a teacher who can never have enough school spirit, these back-to-school crochet projects are bound to inspire you! Here are 7 spirited projects to welcome a new semester.

1. Courageous Caftan

The Courageous Caftan is a gorgeous back-to-school crochet project to show off your skills!

Everyone needs something special to wear on the first day of school. First impressions matter! Show off your mad crochet skills and your awesome style with the Courageous Caftan. This project looks hard to make, but it’s really just 4 rectangles sewn together. You can whip this up for the first day of class in no time, and get ready to start absorbing those compliments!

2. Varsity Jacket

The Varsity Jacket is an awesome back-to-school crochet pattern.

One of the most exciting parts of returning to school is football season! It’s so much fun to show your school spirit at a game. Anyone returning to school will need a cozy sweater for school sporting events. Whip up the Varsity Jacket in your school colors, then sew on some patches to customize your look.

3. Library Cardigan

Every student spends a couple of nights stuck in the library working long hours on a project or paper. To stay cozy on those long evenings, you need the Library Cardigan. It’s perfect for cozying up with a textbook and even better for relaxing when all the studying is done! All those plush post stitches make this garment surprisingly warm, despite all the lace!

4. Apple Picking Mitts

As the weather starts to cool off, you’ll want to crochet yourself something to keep your hands warm. Designer Sue Perez’s fun mitts keep your hands warm while keeping your fingers free so you can take notes in class. These mitts work up fast, but the double rows of mock cables will keep you intrigued as you stitch! The mitts are sized to fit older children through adults, so anyone can go back to school in style.

5. Campo Vest

The Campo Vest crochet pattern is a fun project for students.

One of the best ways to break the ice at a new school is to wear something that people can’t help but compliment. The Campo Vest is a great option for sparking conversation; it’s cute, trendy, touchable, and you made it yourself! Plus, it’s a layer that will serve all semester long, keeping air-conditioning at bay in the summer, fortifying against chilly fall breezes, and layering comfortably under an overcoat in the winter.

6. Raspberry and Lime Purse

The Raspberry and Lime Purse is a crochet tote with a triangle-shaped contrasting color motif.

All students need a good tote bag for laptops, notebooks, pencils, etc. Work up the Raspberry and Lime Purse in your school colors to show your school spirit. The pattern calls for Aran-weight yarn and it is easy to follow, so you’ll have this handy bag whipped up in no time. Plus you can customize it to whatever size you need to hold your everyday carry!

7. Unicorn Wall Decor

The crochet Unicorn Wall Decor is a whimsical project to brighten up any room.

If you want something really “extra” to brighten up a dorm room, think about crocheting up this whimsical unicorn head! This unicorn is deceptively simple to make, worked mostly in the round with simple increases and decreases to provide shaping, and it’s well worth the effort in terms of the compliments you’ll be raking in!

So let us know in the comments: Which of these project exemplifies you or your child’s back-to-school crochet style?

Yours in Stitches,
Andrea
