Turn Your Yarn Stash into a Gift Stash

Last Friday afternoon, my daughter came home and said, “My teacher is having a baby. Can you make her a present I can bring in Monday?” Sure, why not? While I was stitching away though, I thought, “How swell would it be to have a stash of hand-crafted gifts?”

Mags Kandis' new book Gifted: Lovely Little Things to Knit and Crochet provides just that opportunity. A mix of crochet and knit gifts, this book has several crocheted projects perfect for working up in odd moments to increase your stash of spur-of-the-moment handmade gifts.

Here's a peek at some of the projects in the book.

Crochet Flower Brooch

The perfect gift for teachers or a friend in need of a smile. The fineweight yarn here makes a 3- by 5-inch flower, but you can make a tiny one with thread or a super-large one with worsted or bulky. Work up a bunch to have on hand when the need arises.

Gilded Mesh Scarf

This scarf is just right for that one skein of yarn you fell in love with and bought, not knowing what it would become. This beauty is worked up in silk, but linen or thin ribbon yarn. Finish it off with a fringe of beads and you'll have a truly lovely gift.

Colorful Crochet Flowers

I love these fancy little flowers! Not only are they fun and cheery, but they are a great, showy way to turn tiny bits of luxury fibers into a fun accessory (I do hate to toss that yummy yarn, even when there's just a yard or so left). The fun design lets you play with different color combinations, and when you're done the flowers can become a key ring, a pin, bookmark or anything else you can think of. It can adorn a gift or be a gift in itself.

Granny Bag

After you've used up your odd balls of feltable wool to make this perfectly retro bag, it's the perfect stash spot for the rest of your other leftover yarn. Add your hooks and a copy of Gifted and you're ready to grab it and dive in whenever you have an opportunity to make a quick gift.

With Gifted in hand, you'll be on your way from turning your yarn stash into a gift stash.

Best,
Marcy
