10 Tips for Throwing a Crochet Garden Party

We had our photoshoot for Interweave Crochet Summer 2017 in the most beautiful California garden. All the projects from that story have had me in the mood to throw a garden party for months! It’s time to have all my crochet friends over for a garden get-together! Here are 10 tips for throwing the perfect crochet garden party.

1. You need a beautiful table topper.

To give your back yard that extra touch of sophistication, cover your outdoor tables with some type of cloth. Floral tablecloths are perfect for this occasion, and a homemade tablecloth makes the party that much more beautiful. Try Kathryn White’s Garden Party Table Topper pattern from Interweave Crochet Summer 17 and brush up on your filet crochet technique!

2. Do your errands the day before.

Be sure to get all food, beverages, and decorations the day before the party. (You’ll want some time around the garden to set everything up and have some restful alone time before all your guests arrive.) When you run your errands, be sure to pack a to-do list and a water bottle. The Terrace Bag by Kathy Olivarez from Interweave Crochet Summer 2017 is perfect for fitting all your errand-running necessities.

3. Plan a glamorous outfit.

As the host of the garden party, you’ll want to feel confident in what you wear. Pick your favorite top from the Summer 2017 issue and make it for yourself. My favorite is the Oasis Shell by Juliette Bezold. I can’t wait to finish that top and wear it to my own garden party!

4. Protect from the sun.

A garden party can be ruined by the blazing sun. Protect your skin and eyes from the sun by always wearing sunscreen, having your sunglasses on hand, and making yourself the Jardin Hat by Alla Koval, also found in Interweave Crochet Summer 2017. This hat works up quickly even with its wide brim. Its lace patterning is ideal for a formal garden get-together.

5. Have a wrap on hand in case it gets chilly.

If your party lasts into the evening, it is always beneficial to have a wrap or shawl on hand. A fun get-together can be easily ruined if you’re feeling cold. Try Summer 2017’s Herbaceous Shawl by Daniela Nii: it’s a wide shawl with open stitches, making it incredibly versatile. Wear it gathered and wrapped around your neck or long and wide so it will cover your arms.

6. Make your guests comfortable.

Think about the comfort of your guests so they will have as much fun as you. The Backyard Throw from Interweave Crochet Summer 2017 is great to have on hand for guests to sit on in the grass or wrap up in when the sun goes down.

7. Consider making party favors.

The Giardino and Fiore Bracelets from Interweave Crochet Summer 2017 feature crochet flowers, beads, and chain stitches. They work up very quickly and only use a small amount of yarn. Each of your guests would feel so honored to have one!

8. Hang decorations from tree branches.

Trees in your garden serve as the perfect place for hanging décor. Try this cool decorating trick. Grab the DIY Mandala Wall Hanging Kit, but instead of sewing all your mandalas together, use yarn to hang mandalas in embroidery hoops from the trees in your garden. They can spin in the wind and look even more beautiful.

9. Create beautiful table centerpieces.

Centerpieces do so much more than just add beauty to your garden table. They also keep your table toppers from blowing away! Find some spare rocks in your garden and crochet around them with beautiful thread. If you’re not sure where to start, try Monica Johnson’s Wedding Stones pattern from Interweave Crochet Summer 2015.

10. Have cold beverages on hand.

It’s essential to have a cool beverage like iced tea or lemonade on hand for a crochet garden party. Mason jars are easy to grab at the store and perfect for sipping a cool beverage on a hot summer day. Try making the Lacy Jar Cover from Interweave Crochet Summer 2015 in as many colors as you can find. That way, each guest will recognize their glass by its color. Best of all, let your guests take the jars and covers home with them when the party ends.

These projects are just what you need for creating the perfect crochet garden party. Your guests will have so much fun, they may never want to leave! The most important thing to remember for the day is to enjoy your friends, your crochet, and your time outdoors.
