Temescal Cardigan Crochet Pattern

Four different crochet cable-stitch patterns cavort across the surface of this traditional crochet cardigan with bottom-up construction. Use back post double crochet and front post double crochet to create crochet cables on the front, back and even the sleeves of this men’s crochet sweater.

FINISHED SIZE 35 1/2 (39 1/2, 43 1/2, 47 1/2, 51 1/2)” chest circumference, buttoned. Garment shown measures 431/2″, modeled with 7″ ease.

YARN Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash (100% washable wool; 220 yd [200 m]/31/2 oz [100 g]; ): #816 grey, 14 (15, 16, 17, 18) balls.

HOOK Sizes F/5 (3.75 mm) and E/4 (3.5 mm). Adjust the hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

NOTIONS Five 23mm buttons; st markers (m); seaming pins.

GAUGE 20 sts and 15 rows = 4″ in alternating hdc, dc rows with larger hook; braid = 11/2″ wide; basket weave = 23/4″ wide; Celtic plait = 51/2″ wide; all worked with larger hook.

    1. Hello Pam

      It is up to your discretion as to substituting wool with acrylic yarn. Even if they have the same gauge and weight, it doesn’t mean they could be used for the same pattern. If the pattern is written using a wool or wool blend, it would be best to stay with that type of yarn to achieve the best results.

    2. If you can match the gauge, you can use any fiber you choose. I would stay away from cotton, however. It is heavier than acrylic and most animal fiber so, with all the cabling, it would produce a very heavy garment.
