Sunglasses Case with Yarn Leftovers

Every time I buy a pair of sunglasses, it ends tragically. I imagine that, at the time of my purchase, some evil little creature crawls out of its cobweb-curtain-draped hole, stretches to pop its unused joints, casts a devious side-glance at the world, and starts creeping my way. This creature will knock my new sunglasses from the top of my head, somehow loosen the earpiece and then make me bend over quickly so they fall off my head, or just keep moving them from the spot I remember putting them—all with the goal of removing them from my presence.

And it often hurls them toward unforgiving surfaces so they’ll break or scratch.

But the most common sunglasses wounds are 100 percent my fault. Keys, gum, and other various purse items—I give them all an open shot at my cherished shades. Starting now, though, I am changing my ways; I’m going to protect my sunglasses and get rid of some yarn remnants in the process.

Behold! A simple sunglasses case made from a swatch, a button, and some waste yarn. This pattern is quick to knit and customizable—change up the color, stitch pattern, or yarn weight (just be sure to check gauge) to suit your preferences.

Sunglasses Case Knitting Pattern

Yarn weight 5

Skill level 1

Finished Size 3½” wide and 6½” long

Yarn Lana Grossa Alta Moda Cashmere 16 (78% virgin wool, 12% cashmere, 10% polyamide; 120 yd [110 m]/1¾ oz [50 g]): #001 pearl grey, 1 skein.

Needles Size  10 (6 mm): straight and 16″ circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions Tapestry needle; one 1½” button; size J/10 (6 mm) crochet hook.

Gauge 18½ sts and 16 rows = 4″ in moss st.

Notes This sunglasses case is worked back and forth in rows and seamed.

Sunglasses Case

CO 30 sts.
Rows 1 and 3 *K1, p1; rep from * to end.
Rows 2 and 4 *P1, k1; rep from * to end.
Rep last 4 rows until piece measures 7″ from CO. BO all sts.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block. Fold CO edge and BO edge tog and sew 1 short edge and long edge. Button loop: Make crochet chain 3½” long. Fasten off. Sew chain to center of opening. Sew button on opposite side.

Some additional notes:

Make sure to choose a soft yarn if you don’t want the case to scratch the lenses. If you want to use a scratchier yarn, you can always add a fabric lining.

It only took me half a ball to complete this project.
