Introduction

This super fast and inexpensive wrap was created as a belly dance accessory. It would also make a cute cover-up at the beach, or a nice accent piece over a skirt or leggings on a night out.

Materials List

About 250 yards of worsted weight yarn ( for large size) . I used Red Heart Classic 100% acrylic yarn.
Size I-9 5.5mm crochet hook
Two 7/8″ or 1″ buttons
Yarn needle
A piece of cardboard 8 ½” in one direction (This is optional- you will use it to make the fringe)
Sewing needle and thread (to sew buttons on)

Finished Size

This pattern is sized for X-Small (Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large). Each hip wrap is very adjustable. The maximum waist for the wearer is listed below for each size. Measure your waist where you will actually be wearing the wrap (not necessarily where your natural waist is). For example, the natural waist of the dress form is marked with black tape in the photo. However, the waist measurement needed for this pattern is where the waistband of the wrap sits on the dress form (below the natural waist). If wrap is buttoned at it’s maximum waist size, there is no overlap in the skirt. Pictured is size Large on a dress form that has a 34″ waist, and 41″ hips. As you can see, there is some overlap in the skirt. Note: if you are petite and making a Small or X-Small size, you may want to omit row 10.

Maximum waist for: X-Small = 29″

Small = 33″

Medium = 37″

Large = 41″

X-Large = 45″

Gauge

11 ½ dc sts = 4″ (more important)

7 dc rows = 4″ (less important)

Abbreviations and terms used in this pattern:

Ch = chain

Dc = double crochet =

Yo, insert hook into stitch, yo and pull loop up to front of work, (yo, pull through two loops) 2 times

Sl st = slip stitch =

insert hook, yo and pull through to front of work and through loop on hook

st(s) = stitch (stitches)

Tr = triple or treble crochet=

Yo 2 times, insert hook into stitch, yo and pull loop up to front of work, (yo, pull through two loops) 3 times

Dtr = double triple crochet=

yo 3 times, insert hook into stitch, yo and pull loop up to front of work, (yo, pull through two loops) 4 times

yo = yarn over = wrap yarn over hook

The Pattern

Directions:

row 1. Ch 87 (97, 107, 117, 127). Starting with the 3^rd chain from the hook 1 dc in each st across row (85, 95, 105, 115, 125 sts).

row 2. Turn, ch 3 (does not count as a stitch), 1 dc in each st across (85, 95, 105, 115, 125 sts).

row 3. Turn, 1 sl st in each of the next 5 sts, ch 8, skip next 4 sts, 1 dc in next st, (ch 5, skip next 4 sts, 1 dc in next st) 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) times.

row 4. Turn, ch 8, 1 dc in top of next dc st, (ch 5, 1 dc in top of next dc st) 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) times, ending with last dc st in 3^rd ch from ch 8 of previous row.

row 5. Turn, ch 10, 1 tr in top of next dc st, (ch 6, 1 tr in top of next dc st) 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) times ending by making the last tr st into the 3^rd chain from ch 8 in previous round.

row 6. Turn, ch 11, 1 tr in top of next tr st, (ch 7, 1 tr in next tr st) 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) times ending by making the last tr st into the 4^th chain from ch 10 in previous round.

row 7. Turn, ch 12, 1 tr in next tr st, (ch 8, 1 tr in next tr st) 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) times, ending by making the last tr st into the 4^th chain from ch 11 in previous round.

row 8. Turn, ch 14, 1 dtr in top of next tr st, (ch 9, 1 dtr in next tr st) 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) times, ending by making the last dtr into the 4^th chain from ch 12 in previous round.

row 9. Turn, ch 14, 1 dtr in top of next dtr st, (ch 9, 1 dtr in next dtr) 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) times, ending by making the last dtr into the 5th chain from ch 14 in previous round.

row 10. Turn, ch 14, 1 dtr in top of next dtr st, (ch 9, 1 dtr in next dtr) 15 (17, 19, 21, 23) times, ending by making the last dtr into the 5th chain from ch 14 in previous round.

row 11. Turn, [ch 3, skip next 4 sts (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in next st, ch 3, 1 sc in top of the next dtr] 16 (18, 20, 22, 24) times, ending by making the last sc into the 5th chain from ch 14 in previous round.

Fasten off. Weave in ends. Stitch each button to the waistband to fit. Both buttons should be stitched to one end of the waistband so that they button through the other (overlapping) end of the waistband. (Buttons will fit between any two dc stitches). Use photo as a guide.

Make fringe as follows:

Loosely wrap yarn around the cardboard a few times (I wrapped it 4 times). Cut through yarn at one edge of the cardboard. You should now have 4 or 5 pieces of yarn, each approximately 17″ long. (You can just cut your yarn into 17″ pieces. Using the cardboard just speeds up the process a bit since you don’t have to measure each piece). Insert hook through the center dc st of any motif along the bottom edge of wrap. Using your hook pull the center of all 4 strands (held together) through the dc stitch. Make this loop big enough to reach through it with your fingers (or a hook) and pull all of the fringe ends through. Carefully pull on fringe to tighten loop. Repeat process for each motif along bottom edge of wrap. There will be 16 (18, 20, 22, 24) sections of fringe on the last row. Congratulations! You have finished your Spiderweb Hip Wrap!
