Project of the Week: Jasmine Flower Dress
In nearly every issue of Interweave Crochet, I find a pattern that actually takes my breath away. I first saw Alla Koval’s Jasmine Flower Dress while peeking over editor Sara Dudek’s shoulder at an early draft of Interweave Crochet Summer 2019, and I definitely emitted an audible gasp. Sara just finished designing and stitching her own custom wedding dress and I thought I was seeing a preview, but it was better still—a pattern I could make for myself!
The Jasmine Flower dress is special enough to wear as a casual wedding dress (I pinned it to my fantasy wedding board, just saying) or wow crowds of admirers, but it’s also simple and airy enough to wear to a music festival or the beach. You can layer it under a flowing duster or a denim jacket, throw it on over pair of biker shorts and a crop top, or use it as a swimsuit cover-up. Far from being a wardrobe mono-tasker, you’ll find that you’ll easily wear this crochet dress enough to justify all that stitchwork.
This maxi dress design features a solid top, a V-neck with a tassel tie, and an empire-waist silhouette, which is flattering on many body types. It’s worked from the top down, so you can simply stop stitching when your dress reaches a flattering length! The stitch pattern for the stretchy chevron skirt is mesmerizing, and details like picots, eyelets, and tassels keep things fun as you go.
You might think at first sight that this dress is worked in crochet thread, but it’s actually Lindy Chain, a linen/cotton blend chainette fingering-weight yarn from Knit Picks. The chainette quality adds extra spring, bounce, and drape to the lace skirt, keeping things light with an airy core. Choose the swan colorway for a classic heirloom look, or branch out to colors like serrano, urchin, and turmeric. No matter which direction you’ll go, you’ll be incredibly proud of your Jasmine Flower Dress.
