Project of the Week: Dusty Plum Dress
Tucked in the middle of Interweave Crochet Summer 2019‘s Sweet Plum Rose story is a sweet, flirty dress that perfectly blends that desirable 70s go-go boot look with 90s sundress vibes. The Dusty Plum Dress, designed by Moon Eldridge, is a practical wardrobe staple that you’ll reach for again and again, all through the warm-weather months and beyond!
Featuring an on-trend ombré panel of shifting purples on the front, this look would be completely at home at a summer music festival or farmers market and is begging to be Instagrammed. Dress it down with casual sandals or sneakers, or elevate the look with wedge heels—you can’t go wrong with something so cute and versatile. The yarn is an ultra-crisp cotton/linen blend from Kelbourne Woolens that is perfect for hot weather.
If you aren’t afraid of long rows, this project is absolutely for you. The front and back are worked from side to side longways, with skirt shaping accomplished with short-rows. While each row is a bit of a marathon, the result is worth it for the incredible effect that side-to-side construction allows for the ombré panel.
The panel uses spike treble crochet stitches to blur the stripes, allowing the four related tonal colors to bleed into each other. The result is an almost tie-dyed look from a distance, another hot trend for summer. I love the color palette chosen for the sample, but imagine how much fun it would be to pick and choose your own colors! I think a sunset colorway would be absolutely beautiful.
The side-to-side construction also creates a really flattering garment for many different sizes and body types. Moon’s design features sturdy, wide straps, an A-line silhouette, and a wide range of sizing, from a 34-inch bust up to 51 inches. Whatever your size, be sure to incorporate a little bit of positive ease to get that effortless, casual look!
