POW: Stars and Stripes Pillow
Happy Fourth of July! I hope you’re all enjoying hot dogs and fireworks and the cold beverage of your choice today. I always love the events that spring up on this holiday, from 5K races to parades to backyard barbecues. I feel like I’m surrounded by patriotic spirit—not to mention red, white, and blue! So when I was looking for a pattern to feature as this week’s Pattern of the Week, I wanted to find something that would suit this festive day. Enter the Stars and Stripes Pillow from Love of Crochet Summer 2017: it has red, white, blue, stars, and stripes! It’s probably the most patriotic pillow EVER.
Designer Daniela Nii’s stitch pattern for this crocheted pillow looks difficult but is actually fairly simple. (That’s my favorite type of stitch pattern—one that looks complicated enough to impress people but is actually easy to make!) To create the stars on the front, you’ll weave chain loops into star shapes. The pattern includes step-by-step instructions (including photos) for weaving the loops, so you can easily follow along with the steps. The colors for the stripes on the reverse side are carried on the inside of your work, so there aren’t a bunch of ends to weave in when you’re done.
This pillow is obviously very patriotic, but it’s not just for the Fourth of July! These colors work well together any time of year (there’s a reason red, white, and blue are used in so many flags around the world), but if you’re looking for something a little different, try turquoise, white, and yellow, or maybe gray, purple, and blue. Really, the possibilities are endless!
