Pattern of the Week: Folk Tale Purse and a Guide to Reverse Single Crochet

This week’s POW, the Folk Tale Purse from Interweave Crochet Winter 2018, is a beautiful bag made with a clever stitch. Use reverse single crochet to make the curved rib section in one piece, and sew it to the center sections. Source a large, eye-catching button to lend this bag some extra impact.

Reverse single crochet is just what it sounds like. Go through the same motions as a single crochet stitch, just work the row in the opposite direction. If you are right-handed and typically work your stitches right to left in rows, you will work reverse single crochet left to right. If you are left-handed, it will be the reverse. Here are some pictures to help you master the reverse single crochet in the Folk Tale Purse.

To begin the rib pattern:

Row 1: (RS) Ch 1, sc across, do not turn.

Ch 1, rev sc flo across.

To keep the rib pattern going:

Row 2: (RS) Ch1, sc blo across, do not turn.

Repeat Row 2 for patt.

Extra Tips:

There is not a clear place to work into the top of a reverse single crochet stitch, which is why it is often used for edging. For this pattern, you will work the reverse single crochet in the front loops of the previous row, leaving the back loops unworked. The next row of standard single crochet is then worked into those back loops.

It can be tricky to work a reverse single crochet in the front loops only. Be sure to work only through the front loops so that the back loops are left free for the next row of standard single crochet.

Count your stitches. It can be easy to miss a front loop or back loop, and you are most likely used to turning your work. This will help you avoid accidental increases or decreases.
