This is a fun project that you can do in an afternoon. You can decorate a pillow you already have or buy one that will highlight your corsage. There are two versions to complement different pillow shapes. If you are using a small pillow, you can omit the outer petals to scale down the flower. A lighter weight yarn can also be used if you want a smaller, more delicate flower, which would make a lovely pin for a coat or jacket.
- A pillow of your choice
- Worsted/ chunky weight yarn for the Flower:
- Center– 5½ yds
- Middle petals– 16½ yds
- Inner petals– 9 yds
- Outer petals– 24 yds
- Center detail –1¼ yds + ½ yd in 1-2 (depending on version) other yarns for embroidery embellishment
- A medium weight novelty or chenille yarn for the:
- Center trim– 2½ yds
- Worsted/chunky weight yarn for the Blossom Spray (Version 2):
- Blossoms– Four 1yd lengths, and one 1¼yd length of yarns used to make the flower
- Stems– 2 lengths of yarn, one 25” and the other 20”
- One bead for the center of the flower (Version 1)
- Ribbon-in 1”-1½” width, long enough to wrap around your pillow and tie in a generous bow in the back.
- Crochet hook size G (4mm) – size can be adjusted according to the yarn you are using
- Tapestry needle
- Transparent nylon thread
- Sewing needle
US terminology is used in this pattern
st(s)= stitch (es)
sl st= slip stitch
sc= single crochet
hdc= half double crochet
dc= double crochet
tr= triple crochet
dtr=double treble crochet
Center of flower
Round 1: Ch 2, 9 sc into 1st ch. Sl st in first sc to end round. – (9 sts)
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same st (last sl st of previous round), then 2 dc in each st around. Sl st in top of beg ch 3 to end round. (18 sts)
Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in fol st. *2 hdc in next st, hdc in fol st*. Rep from * to * around. Sl st in top of beg ch 2 to end round. (27 sts)
Round 4: Change color and fasten off previous color. Ch 1, 2 sc in same st, sc in each of the fol 2 sts. *2 sc in next st, sc in fol 2 sts*. Rep from * to * around. Sl st in the lp just behind the back lp of beg sc to end. (36 sts)
Round 5: Change color and fasten off previous color. This round will be worked in the lps just behind the back lps of sts of round 4. *Ch 7, sk next 6 sts, sl st in the fol st*. Rep from * to * around.
Round 6: Make petals by working in the ch lps made in the previous round. *Hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, dtr, 2 tr, 2 dc, hdc, sl st bet petals (in sl st of previous round)*. Rep from * to * 4 more times around.
Round 7: *Hdc, dc, [dc, 2dc] three times, dc in next 2 sts, hdc, sl st bet petals*. Rep from * to * in each petal around. Fasten off.
Round 8: Please note that you will be working behind the “middle petals” in the same exact lps used in round 5. Change colors and begin in one of these lps. *Ch 7, sl st bet this petal and the next*. Rep from * to * 4 more times around.
Round 9: Make petals by working in the ch lps made in the previous round. *Hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, hdc, 2 tr, 2dc, hdc, sl st bet petals*. Rep from * to * 4 more times around. Fasten off. Now, you can pull the petals through to the top side of the flower so that they sit on top of the “middle petals”.
Round 10: Please note that you will be working behind the “middle petals”. Change colors and begin this round in the bk lp of a sl st bet two of the “middle petals”. *Ch 12, sl st in bk lp of st between petals*. Rep from * to * 4 more times around.
Round 11: Make petals by working in the ch lps made in the previous round. *Hdc, 3 dc, 3 tr, dtr, 3 tr, 3 dc, hdc, sl st bet petals*. Rep from * to * 4 more times around.
Round 12: *hdc, dc in next 3 sts, [2 dc, dc in next two sts] three times, dc, hdc, sl st bet petals*. Rep from * to * in each petal around. Fasten off.
Weave in any loose ends with a tapestry needle.
In the color of your choice, ch 4, 10 dc into 1st ch. Sl st in top of beg ch 4 to end. Fasten off and weave in loose ends. Lay this circle in the center of the flower, matching up the center holes of each. Thread a tapestry needle with a second color and come up through both centers.
Go down in one of the holes between rounds 2 and 3. Repeat this in every other hole around the circle to make a star. Tie off on the back side and weave in ends.
Next, with transparent nylon thread, sew a bead in the center of the flower.
Make a 4 petal “lazy daisy” stitch that secures the detail circle to the center of the flower. (Here are instructions on how to do this embroidery stitch.)
Next choose another color to stitch a “+” in the center by coming up in the center of the detail circle and down in the holes between rounds 2 and 3. Tie off on the back side and weave in ends.
Small Blossoms (make 4 in various colors): Ch 3, 9 hdc into 1st ch, sl st in top of beg ch 3 to end. Fasten off.
Large Blossom (make 1): Ch 4, 10 dc into 1st ch, sl st in top of beg ch 4 to end. Fasten off.
Weave in ends on all blossoms.
Long Stem: Cut a 25” piece of yarn and thread it through a tapestry needle. Take the large blossom (right side facing you) and insert the needle in a lp on the edge of the backside and pull yarn through, rep with 2 of the small blossoms (Fig.1). Remove the tapestry needle and make a slip knot at the end of the yarn closest to the large blossom. Place this slip knot on your hook. Pull the large blossom right up next to slip knot. Ch 10, then pull a small blossom up to the hook. Ch 10 and pull the remaining blossom up to the hook. Ch 8 and fasten off.
Short Stem: Cut a 20” piece of yarn and working in the same manner as for the long stem, string up the last 2 small blossoms. Place a slip knot on the crochet hook and pull up one of the blossoms, ch 10. Pull up the last blossom and ch 10. Fasten off.
Stitch the two stems together at the ch ends. Stitch this spray to the flower between the two bottom “outer petals”.
Now you need to make 2 loops to attach to the back of the flower to thread your ribbon through.
Loop (make 2): Ch 10, beginning in the 2 nd ch from hook, sc in the bk lp of each ch to the end. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Place the loops across from each other on the base of the middle petals. You can either place them on the top and bottom of the flower, or on the sides depending on which way you want the ribbon to wrap around your pillow. Stitch them securely to the flower with transparent nylon thread.
Thread ribbon through the loops (Fig. 2), wrap around the pillow, and tie in a bow at the back of the pillow. All that remains now is to choose the perfect place for it!
