Crochet New Year’s Resolutions: 5 Reasons NOT to Make Them

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

The beginning of the year is full of hope and joy for the months ahead. We make travel plans, exercise plans, and usually goals relating to our favorite hobbies. But being honest, how many of those goals do you actually achieve, and how many just end up causing stress? Here are 5 reasons not to have a crochet New Year’s resolution.

Reasons to Say No to Crochet Resolutions in 2023

1. You Already Love What You Do, Why Turn It into Work

Crocheting and other hobbies can be a stress-free place where you can just relax and enjoy creating something. No deadlines, no expectations from others, this is for you. Why turn it into something that stresses you out?

2. Try Something New, Or Be Comfortable Doing Something You Know, Without the Pressure

While you may want to try a new stitch or make a sweater or a blanket for the first time, these goals can be more restrictive than they are helpful. Without the goal, if you want to try something new, you don’t need to be afraid to give up if it doesn’t work. A blanket is a much larger project than you can imagine before you start!

3. Strict Rules Leave Little Room for Creativity and Exploration

So you start a project toward your goal, but out of nowhere you get an idea for a different project that will bring you joy. If you are bent on finishing your New Year’s resolution, you may pass on something that will make you happier in the long term. Focus instead on where your creativity leads you, even if it doesn’t fit your goals for the year.

4. Life Happens, You Will Inevitably Set Your Goals Too High

The beginning of the year makes you feel like you have unlimited amounts of time. However, the next 12 months will go just as quickly as the last 12. You will inevitably set your goals too high because you cannot predict what life events will come your way over the next year and leave you less time for your hobbies.

5. Unfinished Goals Lead to Feeling Unsatisfied With What You Have Accomplished

When the end of the year approaches, it is easy to see what you wished you could have accomplished. The goals left unfinished feel like a race against time, the accomplishments are pushed aside as you focus on what you didn’t get done. In the end, having a New Year’s resolution could be more unfulfilling than it is satisfying.

Will you make a crochet New Year’s resolution or will you choose to not have one? What goals do you see as achievable? Which do you add to the list anyway knowing you won’t get to them? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Whether you make a resolution or not, do what will make you happy over the next year!
