LYLYS: The Blue Purl

The Blue Purl in Madison, New Jersey, holds a special place in my heart. This is the store where it all began. I was a senior in college, at Drew University, and a budding crocheter. I walked into town one afternoon and found my way to the Blue Purl, hook and yarn in hand, searching for a little direction. I had never been in a yarn store before and nervously opened the front door. A doorbell rang as I entered, and I was greeted by the friendly face of the owner of the Blue Purl, Maura Meek.

I sheepishly revealed my yarn and hook in my hands and told her I was having trouble with a hat pattern. Maura sat me down at the large table that stands in the center of her spacious shop and worked me through the basics of the pattern.
The Blue Purl became my go-to store as I continued crocheting through my senior year of college. I met some great friends through this store and regard this as a landmark in my personal history.

The Blue Purl started me on my fiber journey and now I’m at Interweave! If you find yourself in the beautiful Madison, New Jersey, make sure you stop in and say “Hi” to Maura and her welcoming team.

When I spoke to Maura, here is what she had to say about her wonderful shop:

The Blue Purl opened for business in February of 2010. My family had moved to Madison several years before, and as an avid knitter I frequented a number of area shops, but missed the wonderful shop I had worked at in Pittsburgh. When my youngest daughter got her driver’s license in her senior year of high school I decided – with encouragement and prodding from my family – that I would open a shop and try to recreate the creative and supportive environment I had been missing.

Now we are a fully stocked and busy yarn shop offering many classes and events such as trunk shows and yarn tastings. Located on Madison’s quaint and bustling Main Street, it is almost always open knitting time at The Blue Purl, and you will find customers at the big table getting help with a pattern, choosing colors for their next project, or learning a new technique from one of our expert knitters and crocheters. We carry a broad range of yarns, patterns, and supplies. We are one of only two shops in NJ to offer Woolfolk yarns, and we do love our Marinated Yarns, dyed right here in Edison, New Jersey.

We try to make welcome every single person who walks into the shop. We recognize that all have different skills, priorities, budgets, and time to devote to this amazing craft, and we try our very best to help however we can. The bottom line is that we want all our customers to enjoy the process and be happy with whatever they are working on. If we can inspire and encourage, pick up dropped stitches, interpret patterns, or chant the steps of the kitchener stitch, that is what we do!

Yours in yarn,

—Gus Baxter
