The Trick for Longer Lasting Crochet Slippers

A pair of crochet slippers
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

Get out the crochet slippers! I don’t have any carpet in my house, and with the exception of a few rugs, my floors can get very cold. This means my toes can get very cold too. So I wear a lot of slippers. That leads to my wearing out a lot of slippers. A consistent problem I have with crochet slippers is wearing through the sole. And after spending hours crocheting a pair of slippers that I love, wearing a hole through the sole makes me sad. But I have discovered the solution for the problem of the worn out slipper sole.

Three sets of slippers
Your crochet slippers will last longer with this easy trick. Simply sew a premade or crocheted sole to the bottom of your slipper’s existing sole.

Solution 1: The Premade Slipper Sole

First, let’s take a look at the Patagonia Slipper Socks. These crochet slippers use a premade slipper sole sewn over the top of the crocheted sole. You can find premade slipper soles online and at many craft stores, and they come in a variety of materials. Some slippers soles include a small section that wraps up the side of the foot, while some are only the bottom sole.

Solution 2: The Additional Crochet Slipper Sole

If you can’t find or don’t want to use a premade slipper sole, you can create your own additional sole. The Sasquatch Slippers have adorable paw print circles that are worked in a contrasting color and seamed to the sole of the slippers. You can create your own paw prints, or you can crochet either two larger circles or an oval to cover the entire sole. Consider working this additional sole in a sturdier yarn or even fabric for longer wear.

The simple whipstitch is a great option for sewing addition soles on your slippers.

Attaching Your Slipper Sole

Whipstitch is a simple stitch to use when attaching your new sole because it is easy to work for a new sole, but it’s also easy to snip and remove when you replace one that’s worn out. Try whipstitching in a fun, bright color for an extra pop. That little flash of color with every step is really fun!

Both sewn on sole options can be removed and replaced when they wear out, allowing you to use and show off your crochet slippers for longer. Consider adding an additional sole to the Uber Warm Slippers or cute crocheted rabbit paw prints to the Fang the Bunpire Slippers. You can add these soles to any pair of slippers and extend your slipper’s life for years.

Four pairs of crochet slippers
Even if your crochet slipper pattern doesn’t call for an additional sole, it is easy to add this trick to make your slippers last longer. Clockwise from top left: Fang the Bunpire Slippers, Nanook Slippers, Ella Slippers, and Uber Warm Slippers.

Whether you, too, live with wood floors, your toes are always cold, you love anything slipper or shoe related, or you just fell in love with one of the patterns I shared today, start a pair of crochet slippers for yourself and make sure they last for years with sewn on additional soles.

Happy crocheting,

Toni
