Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

One of the cool things about crochet is how it can take on a three-dimensional quality with certain stitches. Post stitches, where a stitch is worked around the post of a stitch from a previous row rather than into the top of it, is a technique that does just this. By working stitches post stitches, the surface of your crocheted fabric takes on an embossed effect.

A stitch pattern that shows this technique well is waffle stitch. The process creates a box-like appearance. In crochet, because it’s worked with post stitches, the resulting fabric is thicker and denser than many other types of crochet. This is an easily memorized pattern, with just a two-row, three-stitch repeat.

If you’re new to post stitches, don’t worry—they’re a breeze! A double crochet post stitch is just a normal double crochet, but worked in a different spot than you may be used to

Working Row 1

Row 1: Steps 1-4

1

Chain 3. This counts as a double crochet (Photo 1).

2

Yarnover and insert your hook around the post of the next/second double crochet. This will be a front post double crochet (fpdc), so insert the hook from right to left on the side of the work that is facing you (Photo 2). Complete the double crochet stitch.

3

Work another fpdc stitch next to the one just made (Photo 3).

4

Yarnover and insert your hook around the post of the next double crochet. This will be a back post double crochet (bpdc), so insert the hook from right to left on the back side of the work (Photo 4). Complete the double crochet stitch.

5

Repeat steps 2-4 across the rest of the row, ending with a bpdc in the final stitch. Row 1 is the wrong side of the fabric (Photo 5).

Working Row 2

Row 2: Steps 6-9

6

Turn your work and chain 3 (Photo 6).

7

Yarnover and insert your hook around the post of the next double crochet. This will be a bpdc, so insert the hook from right to left on the back side of the work. Notice that the stitch you’re working around was a fpdc when worked from the other side. By working a bpdc from this side, you’re essentially doing the same action as a fpdc when worked from the opposite side (Photo 7). Complete the double crochet stitch.

8

Work another bpdc stitch next to the one just made (Photo 8).

9

Yarnover and insert your hook around the post of the next double crochet. This will be a front post double crochet, so insert the hook from right to left on the front side of the work. Notice the opposite here from the previous stitch. The stitch you’re working around was a bpdc when worked from the other side. By working a fpdc from this side, you’re essentially doing the same action as a bpdc when worked from the opposite side (Photo 9). Complete the double crochet stitch.

Crochet waffle stitch step 10
End of Row 2: Step 10

10

Repeat Steps 2-4 across the rest of the row, ending with a fpdc in the final stitch. Row 2 is the right side of the fabric (Photo 10).

The RS and WS of Waffle Stitch Fabric

The right side of crochet waffle stitch fabric is quite different from the wrong side. Notice how on the front of the work, there are columns of single post stitches with “boxes” in between created by the alternating of front and back post stitches. On the back side, notice the columns of two post stitches with columns of negative space in between.

Projects that Highlight Waffle Stitch

Though Waffle Stitch is not technically reversible, it’s aesthetically pleasing on both sides. Because of this, it can be a great choice for projects where you’ll see both sides, such as blankets and scarves. Waffle Stitch also works well in things like sweaters and hats where a thicker, warmer fabric is desired. The Skep Vest, designed by Isa Catepillán, shows off this pattern stitch nicely and makes for a nice warm layering piece!
