Yarn Review: Happy Place Yarn from TL Yarn Crafts & Hobbii
Designer, instructor, and author, Toni Lipsey of TL Yarn Crafts, has added a new title to her resume—yarn producer! She has partnered with Denmark-based yarn company Hobbii to produce Happy Place yarn. Toni was kind enough to send us a few balls to play with and test. Today, we are sharing the results!
Happy Place Yarn Specs
Content: 50% wool, 50% cotton
Put-up: 273 yd (250 m)/3.5 oz (100 g)

Weight: DK/light worsted

Fiber Blend
When you first hold Happy Place yarn, the buttery soft hand makes you instantly turn to the ball band asking, “What is this? It’s so soft!” Reading the label, you’ll discover it’s an all-natural, 50-50 blend of wool and cotton. This balance of fibers makes the yarn warm, durable, and ultrasoft.
As I crocheted a swatch, I was surprised by the lightness of the yarn. Cotton can often feel heavy and dense but here, the wool brings a loftiness. I was also smitten with how smoothly the yarn glides over the hook. The 16-ply structure, which is designed to reduce splitting, works into a fabric that is consistent and even. Instantly, I imagine this yarn would make a beautiful garment.

Colorways
The term “mélange” means medley or mixture. As it relates to yarn, it refers to a range of color terms as well as the blending of fibers. Heathered and marled are examples of melange color effects, and it’s what you’ll see in half of the Happy Place colorways.
Toni carefully curated 20 solid shades and 20 companion blends to create a palette that has something to offer everyone. Whether you’re looking for something bright that pops or you appreciate subtle, earthy tones, having 40 distinct colors are your fingertips is something I love about this yarn. The wide range of coordinating colors makes it easy to achieve gradients and this yarn is great for colorwork.

Other Thoughts
The samples I crocheted were worked with the hook size recommended on the label, H-8 (5 mm). I really liked the gauge with this hook when working single and half double crochet, but I found the gauge a bit too loose when working double or triple crochet. I would size down on the hook for tighter tension if a project was predominately double or triple crochet. However, that’s just my personal preference, and more to do with my tension than the yarn.
This yarn’s unique blend and color options make it a versatile choice for a wide range of projects. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or a beginner, Happy Place is suitable for projects that span all skill levels. Think of it the next time you’re looking for yarn for garments, accessories, and home décor projects.
TL Yarn Craft’s Happy Place yarn has quickly become an Interweave favorite for its harmonious blend of cotton and wool, extensive color options, and luxurious texture. Whether you’re creating cozy winter wearables or lightweight summer accessories, Happy Place will transport you to a realm of crafting delight. So, it’s time to dive into your creative endeavors and discover your “Happy Place” with this exceptional yarn.
