Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

When it comes to granny square patterns, I always think of a granny square afghan that I had on my bed as a child. It was shades of brown and orange—not the most attractive blanket in the world by a long shot. But it was made by my aunt, and I could feel the love in each of those squares.

Needless to say, granny squares are a staple of crochet. Whether they’re appearing in granny square blankets or in less traditional pieces like jackets and accessories, granny squares are here to stay. This month, to celebrate the granny square, we’ve brought together five of our favorite granny square patterns for you. These pieces use granny square motifs in a bunch of different ways, keeping the stitching interesting!

Oaknut Blanket

For the fall lover in your life, the Oaknut Blanket by Emily Lloyd makes the perfect gift. This granny square pattern uses traditional grannies and an acorn motif granny to create a delightfully autumnal piece. The acorn motif is repeated as edging, and the blanket uses bulky-weight yarn, making it extra cozy for chilly nights.

Labyrinths Cardigan

Afghan + sweater = this cardigan! The Labyrinths Cardigan by Robin Chachula is a bright, colorful sweater to add to your list. This is a great stash-busting project—just be sure to keep the main color consistent throughout to create a uniform look to your motifs.

Marmalade Skies Afghan

If a traditional granny square pattern were viewed through a kaleidoscope, it would probably look a little like the Marmalade Skies Afghan by Mary Beth Temple. Traditional squares are paired with diamond motifs to create a geometrical celebration. The motifs are worked separately and stitched together during finishing, so this is a great project for downtime at the doctor’s office or waiting at a café.

Larger Than Life Bag

The Larger Than Life Bag by Cecily Klein is a stylish messenger bag-like tote for all your day-to-day adventures. This granny square pattern uses alternating color motifs for a unified look. A fabric lining and zippered top finish off this charming bag.

Resplendent Afghan

Julie Yeager’s stunning Resplendent Afghan puts a modern twist on the conventional granny square pattern. Cheerful, bold colors combine with raised post stitches to make the motifs both bright and textural. Like the Marmalade Skies Afghan, this piece is worked in separate motifs and joined together during finishing. A traditional black border completes this afghan.

And there you have it! I hope our five favorite granny square patterns inspire you to make your own granny square project someday soon. And if you’ve never made a granny square before, we can help with that.
