Dreaming of Snow: Crocheted Snowflakes
I’ve been dreaming of snow.

This isn’t a huge surprise, since I usually start dreaming about snowy days and long, candlelit nights as early as July. Once October rolls around in Colorado and we finally get snow, well, I couldn’t be happier.
Snowy days are ideal for crafting, letting the warm fibers flow through hands and hooks. What better way to celebrate winter’s snowy weather than with some crocheted snowflakes? Below, I’ve picked four of my favorite snowflake-inspired patterns, and I hope these fashionable fractals inspire you this winter season.
Pakkas Table Runner
Brand new from Interweave Crochet Winter 2021 comes the Pakkas Table Runner by designer Anne McFarland. This delicate piece of décor is joined as you work, leaving very little finishing at the end. It also makes a great pocket project. For a longer table runner, simply make more hexagonal motifs. Additionally, you can experiment with shades of blue to create a wintertime extravaganza of crocheted snowflakes!
Thundersnow Bag
Last year, I witnessed thundersnow for the first time. It is exactly what it sounds like: a thunderstorm but with snow. It was truly stunning to watch. In celebration of thundersnow comes the Thundersnow Bag by designer Linda Permann. Crocheted in worsted-weight yarn, this bag is worked from the center out using two identical cabled circles. Only two of the rounds are worked on the wrong side, so the snowflake forms before your eyes.
Snowflake Shawl
For a truly fractal wintertime accessory, consider designer Natasha Robarge’s crocheted Snowflake Shawl. Join-as-you-go hexagonal motifs create a shifting patterns of diamonds and circles on this airy shawl. This pattern is also a great one to experiment with a color shift yarn. Try it in a variegated yarn or stick to the original and use a darker yarn for the edge.
Stellar Crocheted Snowflakes
Looking for some stunningly delicate décor? These Stellar Snowflakes by designer Connie Lee Lynch are tantalizing homages to the season’s weather. Worked in delicate thread, these crocheted snowflakes are perfect for ornaments or adornments on a holiday wreath. Make them in metallic shades of silver and white for a truly wintry look. See how to stiffen your crocheted snowflakes.
