School season is upon us and I’m thinking about college dorm rooms. No, I’m not young enough to be contemplating decorating my own dorm room. Plus, I like my own space too much, thank you very much. But I’ve reached that age when the next generation in my family is about ready to leave for their own college adventures. And I am thinking about how to inject a little bit of home into that next step. My picks for dorm room crochet projects fall into three categories: soft goods, organization and home décor, and college color accessories.

Soft Goods

Crocheted dorm soft goods include things like afghans, pillows and rugs. Dorm rooms have strict rules about permanent changes like painting walls or swapping out furniture, but you can do a lot with a crochet hook.

A crochet afghan across the bottom of a bed is the perfect option for extra warmth when homesickness strikes. The vintage design of the Harvest Moon Afghan makes this design both cool and homely. Do kids say cool anymore? A few throw pillows on the bed or in a study chair make a dorm room feel more like home. Plus don’t forget a crochet dorm rug like the Kaleidoscope Eyes Rug to keep feet safe from the cold utilitarian floor. These dorm crochet soft goods make a big impact by bringing the warmth of home to a new college experience.

Baskets and Home Décor

You don’t have to tackle big projects like a rug or afghan for your next crochet dorm project. Organization is important in small spaces. Crochet baskets like the Garden Plot Baskets and Basket Cases are sturdy and trendy ways to corral bigger pieces like blankets and clothes or smaller items like pens, keys or snacks.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a room your own. Crochet dorm projects like organizing baskets and easy wall hanging make a room personable. | Clockwise from top left: Unicorn Wall Décor by Brenda K. B. And you don’t have to put holes in the wall to hang décor in a dorm room. Removable adhesive strips mean you can add to your dorm crochet décor with colorful and fun pieces like the Diamond Head Hanging by Hayley DeBerard, Head over Hexi Headboard, or even the Unicorn Wall Décor (the perfect place to hang your crochet hat).

College Color Accessories

Do you remember your college’s colors? I still have a small collection of items in brown and gold. College crochet gifts wouldn’t be complete without a crochet accessory in your student’s college colors. In fact, you can make something for everyone in the family and surprise them for their next football game.

Don’t forget to whip up a collection of accessories in school colors for the whole family! | Clockwise from top left: School Colors Hat by Brenda K. B. Anderson, Urban Hat and Cowl by Kabila Sri Ponnusamy, Oakdale Hat by Darla J. Fanton, and Swank Scarf and Cap Set by Alla Koval.

There are so many options to choose from! The Oakdale Hat, Swank Scarf and Cap Set, Urban Hat and Cowl, and School Colors Hat are a great place to start.

Leaving home for college is an exciting and intimidating step. I remember when I was in school, my mom would create small care packages with candy, snacks, something silly and sometimes a special homemade gift. I would have loved to find any of the ideas above in one of those deliveries.

Which dorm crochet project do you think your student will love most? We’d love to hear your comments about how you use crochet to bring a little home to a college dorm.

Happy crocheting,
Toni
