Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

The winter forecast is in! They are calling for an extra-long winter with cold temperatures and drifts of snow. It’s time to prepare by creating a few more crochet sweaters! Or at least, it’s a good excuse to open your sweater queue and choose a new project. Just as important as your pattern is choosing the right crochet sweater yarn.

Before you begin your next woolly winter sweater, check out some of our favorite yarns for crocheting sweaters. Whether you’re ready to crochet your first garment or looking for fresh fiber inspiration, these are all great choices.

Put-up: 131 yd (119 m)/1.75 oz (50 g)
Weight: Sport
Crochet Gauge: 16–20 sc = 4” on E-7 hook

We Crochet Galileo is a 50% Merino wool, 50% viscose from bamboo yarn that combines the warmth and softness of wool with the drape, luster, and strength of bamboo. When it comes to sweater yarns, this is an affordable wool yarn with a great feel. Note that this is not superwash wool. So, this yarn requires handwashing. I think I will be adding Gem and Solaris (an earthy pine green and a rich butterscotch) to my cart for an upcoming Thistledown Top sweater project.

Valley Yarns Valley Superwash DK is one of my favorite easy-care sweater yarns. Incidentally, it is also a great yarn for crochet gifts such as hats and mittens. For a crochet sweater that you’ll spend hours making and wear for years, consider a splurge-worthy yarn. Malabrigo Rios is a 100% superwash Merino wool yarn that is available in countless colors! The subtle, kettle-dyed colors give your sweater incredible depth, and if you haven’t ever felt just how soft and smooth this yarn is, you need a skein just to pet. Simply running your fingers through the strands of yarn is a great stress reliever. When it is running through your hook, it’s practically meditation.

These are just a few of my favorite yarns for a crochet sweater you’ll love! Choosing the right yarn for your crochet sweater is a crucial step in ensuring the success of your project. Consider the fiber content, texture, and color options that align with your vision and needs. There’s a perfect yarn for every crochet sweater project. So, grab your hooks, explore these yarn options, and create a sweater that’s both stylish and comfortable to wear.

Toni Rexroat’s mother first handed her a crochet hook as a child, and it was love at first stitch. From her first chain stitch, Toni determined to master the yarn and hook and has since tackled Tunisian crochet, crochet cables, lace, crochet motifs, colorwork, and more while filling her own as well as her family’s and friend’s closets with crochet sweaters, accessories, afghans, and more.
