Crocheted Dorm Life Essentials: Interweave Favorites
When I got into college, the coming-of-age experience I was most excited about was to decorate my dorm room. I would able to choose all my decorations and have my space looking just how I wanted it. Or so I thought. My space was cute, but looking back, it wasn’t as cozy as I would have originally liked. Unfortunately, at that time, I had no idea how to crochet. Crochet would have added some warmth to the cinderblock walls and rough carpet, as well as adding some style to my college wardrobe! Here are some favorite crochet projects for dorm life from the Interweave archives that we know you’re going to love.

From crochet décor to adorable hats, these quick projects are great for getting you or your loved one started on campus! You can get each pattern on its own, or get the whole collection to live your most cozy, stylish dorm life.

First Light Rug
When I was looking for rugs to cover my floor, all I could find was solid-colored shaggy rugs that would clog my vacuum. The First Light Rug, by Gwen Buttke McGannon, makes a unique and adorable area rug, measuring roughly 4x2ft when completed and blocked—but you can make it as big as you would like! The rug’s motifs start off as circles before they are connected, creating a textured square pattern throughout. Connect the motifs as you go for quick-to-finish décor.

Jardin Hat
I spent a good amount of time outside while in college; there were days when I would spend hours outdoors, working on an art project. The Jardin Hat, created by Alla Koval, features adorable crochet lace that gives you just enough protection from the sun without making your head sweat. The brim is shaped with concealed wire so that the hat won’t become floppy. This quick project is perfect for hotter days at the farmer’s market or for walks to class.

Simple Succulents
It’s a blessing that I didn’t start getting into plants until after I graduated. I did not have the time to take care of them or the inclination to research how to, and I was often gone on weekends. The Simple Succulents, designed by Tagil Perlmutter, make the perfect dorm “plant” —without the bugs and dirt. The lively crochet pieces look great in wall hangers and will even work well in regular small planters.

Long Division Hat
Walking between buildings was rough in the winter if it was a windy day. My ears would become numb after the short, ten-minute walk to my class. The Long Division Hat by Brenda K.B. Anderson would have kept me warm. Plus, it is the perfect hat for watching sports in the cooler months, and for all-around wear. This bonnet and beanie hybrid is crocheted with chunky yarn and features three large pom-poms for a touch of fun.

Lofty Pouf
Prop your feet up while studying hard with the Lofty Pouf by Anne Weil. You can crochet this piece in just an hour with chunky yarn and your hand as the crochet hook. This piece adds coziness to any space and comes in handy for extra seating.
Whether you are the one going to school or are a relative of someone who is, the Interweave Editor’s favorite crochet projects for dorm life will add a sense of comfort and give a homey feel to an unfamiliar space.
