This crochet vest is a great nod to vintage fashions. Try crocheting it in neutrals for a crocheted faux fur nod to the 1950s or pick a bright fun color and bring the 1970s back.

The crochet loop stitch is also known as the crochet fur stitch because the soft texture of the yarn loops mimics the look of fur. It can also be used to create a shag-type fabric or as a trim or crochet edging on clothing, accessories, or home decor items like pillows and afghans. In the Campo Vest, the loops are worked to about 1 inch, but you can easily adjust the length of the loops when working this crochet technique.

I think that crocheting the loop stitch makes much more sense with a few step-out images, so let’s walk through working a few loop stitches.

Work to the first loop stitch. Wrap the yarn from front to back over the index finger of your left hand–or your right hand if you are a lefty crocheter. Pull up to 1″ (or desired length) of yarn. Insert your hook in the indicated stitch or space. Pass the hook around and behind both strands of loop. Catch both strands, pull through (there should be 3 loops on your hook). Finally yarn over and draw through all of the loops on the hook. Loop stitch finished!

Remember that unless you want loops on both sides of your fabric or unless you are working in the round, you will need to work a non-loop row after every loop row. Usually this is a single crochet row. You work the loop stitch on the wrong side row. As you are crocheting, the loops will be formed on the right side of the fabric.

The first few loop stitches might be a little awkward, but stick with it. Soon you’ll see how much fun this surprisingly easy crochet stitch really is. Start your Campo Vest today!

Happy crocheting,
Toni
