How to Crochet Lattice Cables

swatch showing crochet lattice cables
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

Crocheted cables can be made using a variety of different techniques. This how-to will show you the post-stitch method to crochet lattice cables. As the name suggests, the lattice cable resembles a garden trellis with its crisscrossed stitches. This lovely stitch pattern can be used in a variety of projects where just the right side of the fabric is shown. Garments, bags, cowls, and gloves are just a few ideas that come to mind. With a six-stitch repeat, it’s easy to adjust to fit your needs!

Grab some yarn and your hook to follow along and practice the technique! There are many steps to this process but don’t worry, we’ll guide you each step of the way. And it’s much less complicated than it appears.

Crochet Lattice Cables Row-by-Row Instructions

As shown in this tutorial, the lattice cable will require a multiple of 6 stitches + 4. For my swatch showing 3 pattern repeats, I’m beginning with 22 stitches.

Row 1

Crochet Lattice Cables Steps 1-4
Row 1: Steps 1-4

1

Begin by working 2 rows in single crochet, or a foundation single crochet row + a plain single crochet row.

2

Single crochet in the first three stitches.

3

Yarnover twice to begin the first front post triple crochet stitch (Photo 1). Note: All post stitches on this row will be worked into the first single crochet row. This stitch will be worked into the sixth single crochet from the right hand side. Insert your hook from right to left underneath the post of this sixth stitch (Photo 2). Complete the triple crochet stitch (Photo 3).

4

Work another front post triple crochet stitch around the single crochet stitch just to the left of the one just worked (Photo 4).

Crochet Lattice Cables Steps 5-8
Row 1: Steps 5-8

5

Yarnover twice to begin the next front post triple crochet stitch. Work a front post triple crochet stitch around the fourth single crochet stitch from the right (Photo 5).

6

Work a front post triple crochet stitch around the fifth single crochet stitch from the right, which is the stitch just to the left of the one just worked (Photo 6).

7

Next, we’re going to skip the four single crochet stitches behind the post stitches just worked. It helps to turn the work toward you so you can clearly see the previous row. In Photo 7, the hook is pointing to the stitch we will work our next stitch into, which is just after the four skipped stitches.

8

Single crochet into this stitch and the next stitch (Photo 8).

Crochet Lattice Cables Steps 9-12
Row 1: Steps 9-12

9

The 6 stitches just worked are our repeat for the row. To begin the next six-stitch repeat, we need to identify which single crochet to work our post stitch into. Counting from the last post stitch from our single crochet row, yarnover twice and insert your hook into the fifth single crochet to the left (Photo 9). Complete the triple crochet stitch.

10

Triple crochet into the next single crochet from the first row (Photo 10).

11

Work the next two front post triple crochet stitches into the two single crochet stitches just to the right of the two just made (Photo 11).

12

Complete the row as established, ending with three single crochet stitches to mirror the beginning of the row (Photo 12).

Row 2

Row 2 and all wrong side rows will simply be a plain row of single crochet.

Row 3

We will now be shifting our cable stitches over. Each will be moved left or right by one stitch. All of our post stitches moving forward will always be worked into post stitches from previous rows.

Crochet Lattice Cables Steps 13-16
Row 3: Steps 13-16

13

Single crochet into the first two stitches. Then, yarnover twice and insert your hook into the first front post triple crochet stitch from Row 1 (Photo 13). Complete the stitch.

14

Work a front post triple crochet stitch into the next post stitch from Row 1 (Photo 14).

15

Next, skip the two single crochet stitches behind the post stitches just work and insert your hook into the next/third stitch. Single crochet into the next two stitches (Photo 15).

16

Yarnover twice and insert your hook into the next post stitch from Row 1. Complete the stitch (Photo 16).

Crochet Lattice Cables Steps 17-20
Row 3: Steps 17-20

17

Work a front post triple crochet stitch into the next post stitch from Row 1 (Photo 17).

18

Yarnover twice and insert your hook into the next post stitch from Row 1. Complete the stitch (Photo 18).

19

Work a front post triple crochet stitch into the next post stitch from Row 1. Skip the next 4 single crochet stitches behind the post stitches just work and insert your hook into the next/fifth stitch (Photo 19).

20

Single crochet into this stitch and the next stitch. Then, work a front post triple crochet stitch into each of the next two post stitches from Row 1. Continue as established to the end of the row (Photo 20).

Row 4

Work a wrong side single crochet row.

Row 5

Note that in Row 5 some stitches are double crochet, where the other traveling post stitches are triple. This is because on this row, the first and last two post stitches aren’t moving anywhere and don’t need the next length of the stitch to travel.

Crochet Lattice Cables Steps 21-24
Row 5 : Steps 21-24

21

Single crochet into the first two stitches. Then, work a front post double crochet stitch into each of the next two post stitches (Photo 21).

22

Single crochet in the next two stitches. Note that we are going to be crisscrossing the next two sets of post stitches. Begin by skipping the first two post stitches, yarnover twice and insert your hook into the following post stitch from Row 3 (Photo 22). Complete the stitch.

23

Front post triple crochet into the next post stitch (Photo 23).

24

Yarnover twice. Working over the top of the post stitches just made, insert your hook into the first of the two skipped post stitches. Complete the stitch (Photo 24).

Row 5: Step 25

25

Front post triple crochet into the next post stitch. Complete the row as established (Photo 25).

Row 6

Work a wrong side single crochet row.

Row 7

You’ll notice that Row 7 this is almost the same as Row 3, except it’s offset by half a pattern repeat.

Crochet Lattice Cables Steps 26-29
Row 7: Step 26-29

26

Single crochet into the first three stitches. Front post triple crochet into the next two post stitches from Row 5 (Photo 26).

27

Yarnover twice and insert your hook into the next post stitch from Row 5. Complete the stitch (Photo 27).

28

Front post triple crochet into the next post stitch (Photo 28).

29

Skip four single crochet stitches behind the post stitches just worked, single crochet into the next two stitches. Complete the row as established (Photo 29).

You can really see that lattice pattern forming now!

Row 8

Work a wrong side single crochet row.

Row 9

Row 9 is an offset repeat of Row 5, but with one big difference. The second set of two post stitches in each repeat will be worked behind the previous two. Plus, you’re almost there! The end of Row 9 marks the end of the row-repeat pattern.

Crochet Lattice Cables Steps 30-33
Row 9: Steps 30-33

30

Single crochet into the first three stitches. Skip the first two post stitches from Row 7. Front post triple crochet into each of the next two post stitches from Row 7 (Photo 30).

31

Yarnover twice. Working behind the two stitches just made, insert your hook around the post of the first skipped post stitch from Row 7. With the hook still inserted, lift the hook and post stitch up to the top of the work. This will make it easier to complete the stitch. Complete the stitch (Photo 31).

This will feel a bit awkward at first, but it gets easier with practice!

32

Again, working behind those first two post stitches, front post triple crochet into the second skipped post stitch. Skip four single crochet stitches behind the post stitches just worked and single crochet into the next two (Photo 32).

33

Complete the row as established (Photo 33).

Repeat Rows 3-9 for the pattern.

Crochet Lattice Cables

The swatch above shows what the pattern looks like with another pattern repeat/8 rows worked.

Notice how our lines are interwoven. This is because we are alternating working post stitch crosses on top for Row 5 and from behind on Row 9. If we worked all of the post stitch crosses on top, the “embossed” lines on top would all be slanting to the right.

Where to Use this Stitch Pattern

Crimson Hooded Cardigan crochet pattern by Shannon Leigh Roudhán

The Crochet Lattice Cable stitch is a fun one to work and it’s so pretty! I love the geometry of the lines and the symmetry of the stitch pattern. You can see this stitch in action on the gorgeous Crimson Hooded Cardigan by Shannon Leigh Roudhán. This is a good example of using it as an accent, such as just on the center fronts and hood.
