Find Your Perfect Crochet Hook Set

Knit Picks WeCrochet Crochet Hook Set
Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

What is the most important choice you make before beginning a new crochet project? Obviously it’s important to find an inspiring pattern and fabulous yarn. But if you are going to spend hours and hours creating a sweater, blanket, or shawl, it’s even more important to have the right tools—and by that I mean the right crochet hook. I won’t be telling you about one perfect crochet hook set; there isn’t a perfect crochet hook for everyone and any project. But it’s important to test out different crochet hook styles yourself to find the one that makes those hours of crochet enjoyable, not a pain in the wrist.

Here are a few crochet hook sets that are either my favorite, ones I’ve found the most comfortable and useful, or which I have heard fellow crocheters praise.

Knit Picks WeCrochet Crochet Hook

I am a big fan of wood crochet hooks. They transition comfortably from warm to cold weather (which we have a lot of here), and I love the silky smooth feel in my hands. I have a set of these Knit Picks WeCrochet wood crochet hooks (affiliate link), and they are my go-tos for comfortable crocheting, especially with lightweight yarns.

You will notice that the shaft does not widen into the normal grip. This little design tweak makes these hooks perfect for taller stitches and cables. The loop on your hook stays the same size as it slides up the shaft and doesn’t get pulled wider by the grip. These hooks are also perfect for small Tunisian crochet projects. I also love the beautiful colorways. No crochet hook is exactly the same grain and color.

Clover Amour Crochet Hook

Having a comfortable grip might be critically important to you. I know many crocheters who prefer the soft plastic grip of the Clover Amour crochet hooks (affiliate link). They find the ergonomic, soft design cushions their hands for long hours of crochet. At the same time the metal hook is durable and slips easily into crochet fabric they are working crochet stitches into.

Many of the people who love these hooks work on large projects and afghans where you work the same stitch or stitch pattern repeat for the whole project. Plus who wouldn’t love how easy it is to tell the hook sizes apart? No need to explain hook sizes to the crochet newbie, just “Pass me the green hook.”

Denise2Go 2-Hook Interchangeable Tunisian crochet hooks
Need a Tunisian crochet hook? This Denise2Go set (affiliate link) has something for all your needs—even double-ended projects. | Image source: Denise2Go

I am not usually as big of a fan of plastic crochet hooks, but the Denise2Go 2-Hook Interchangeable Tunisian crochet hooks (affiliate link) are some of my most-used hooks. These hooks are just so versatile. You can change the length of the cord at the end of your Tunisian hook (very useful if you are working on a project that increases stitches as you work).

And if you are working on a double-ended Tunisian crochet project, you can trade out the stopper at the end of the cord with a second hook in the same size (included in the set). And these crochet hooks come in bright colors stored in a fun cloth case.

The Quilted Bear Crochet Hook Set

The cute Quilted Bear crochet hook set is the next on my list to test. I love the floral design polymer clay handles wrapped around the aluminum hook. That detail lifts them from just a common hook to a fun tool I’d reach for over and over again. These hooks could easily become my “workhorse” crochet hooks—the ones I reach for over and over again while whipping up gifts.

These are just a few of the crochet hooks in my and my friends’ collections. They are the ones that you are most likely to find in any one of my crochet WIPs. What is your favorite crochet hook and why? Share your advice in the comments; I’m always looking for a new hook to test!
