Crochet Granny Squares in Fashion
Granny squares and crochet have become staples of the fashion runway. For many years, designers have showcased the handicraft of this technique in every season’s collections. And Fall/Winter 2021 and Spring/Summer 2022 have been no exception. These latest designs have played up the texture of crochet and the basic stitch pattern we associate with granny squares over the bright colors that have captured attention in past runway shows. But don’t worry—there were still a few bold and bright designs. So what are the crochet trends for 2022, and where might we find crochet fashion in the wild?
Texture and Layers
This year, crochet is the perfect layer. The texture of crochet stitches has captured designers’ imaginations, and you will see a lot of layered pieces highlighting crochet’s unique texture. This texture of crochet makes the perfect vest or jacket. While a few pieces on the runway were a bit avant garde, you can create that same layered effect with the Dream on Duster or the Arroyo Seco Top.
Granny Square Stitch
Jil Sander’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection deconstructs the granny square. She worked the chain 3, 3 double crochet in the next chain 3 space pattern. This method is commonly associated with granny squares and used to design a bold vertical stripe pattern. Jil used it to create an eye-catching sweater, dress, and even a pair of fabulous pants!
The Gobi Dress also uses this granny stitch to create horizontal stripes. These stripes break up the pastel motifs and lacy fabric. It’s simply perfect for summer. And the Ava Skirt, with its diagonal line of granny squares and reversible triangles of color is an undeniably fashionable vacation staple.
Crochet Purses and Bags
Another item spotted on the runway this year was the crochet bag. A good crochet bag never goes out of style, just like the ever stylish granny square. Add the Mod Squad Bag to your collection in a variety of colors, from the striking black and white shown here to more subtle pastels or bright jewel tones, and you’ll feel ready to walk the runway even on a trip to the grocery store.
I have a feeling the granny square will be a go-to motif on and off the runway this year. With the terrible uncertainty gripping the world as I write this, I find myself craving the warmth of a granny square afghan and the hug of a crochet sweater. Granny squares were my first introduction to crochet, and they still hold a nostalgic fascination for me.
Do you remember your first crochet granny square project? Was it an acrylic afghan that resided on the back of the couch and was always in easy reach for an afternoon nap? Or was it a brightly colored sweater or even a pair of pants completely crafted from yarn? I hope that by the time you read this, calm will have returned to our world and the most stressful choice you will face is what color to crochet your newest project in.
Happy crocheting,
Toni
