Tackle Crochet Cables with Easy Patterns & More
What is a crochet cable? Shannon Mullet-Bowlsby, of Shibaguyz Designz, describes crochet cables as “stitches worked out of order to create a series of twists or traveling stitches that create an overall texture pattern.” With the rise in popularity that cables have seen over the last several years, the types and techniques of crochet cables we have seen designers using and creating have expanded significantly. From the faux cables of the Rimaye Cowl or the Obion Scarf to the traditional cables of the Temescal Cardigan or Robyn Chachula’s crochet cable pillows, you’re sure to find a crochet cable pattern you will love.
In fact, if you’re looking for a new favorite, you’ll want to check out the Frosinn Pullover designed by Yessabett Bueno. This sweater is worked from the top down in rounds. That means that you only need to work front post half treble crochets to create the cables that twine around the top of this sweater and draw the eye to your face! Personally, it’s always been the back post stitches that I struggle with keeping clean and precise.
In case you are new to cables or you need a refresher tip for the beginning of the year, remember that in order to keep your cables crisp and decrease the risk of creating “holes” when you are working tall stitches or reaching with your hook to work around the posts of stitches in the previous rows, you’ll want to choose a crochet hook that doesn’t taper and make sure to keep the top loop (which will become the top of the stitch) tight on your hook. We have more great crochet cable tips, but my biggest recommendation is to pick a pattern with a cable that will both excite and challenge you!
