Crochet Bouquets at the Olympics 2022!

My colleague emailed me this morning with a link to an article about the Olympics and Paralympics 2022. During this year’s games, which are being held in Beijing this month, the winners of the events aren’t receiving the traditional floral bouquets. Instead, they are being given “hand-knit wool bouquets.” Which is lovely! There’s just one problem.

The bouquets are crocheted, not knit!

Regardless of the craft, though, we wanted to celebrate these gorgeous bouquets for the 2022 Olympics. Each one consists of six flowers: rugosa roses, Chinese roses, lilies of the valley, laurel, sweet osmanthus, and olive branches. The flowers each have a different meaning, such as friendship, tenacity, unity, and peace. Over 1,200 bouquets have been made and are intended to reflect the low-carbon concept behind this year’s games. So, while we celebrate the incredible athleticism of this year’s competitors, let’s also give a cheer for the amazing crafters behind these beautiful bouquets.
