Crochet Bags: The Perfect Summer Accessory

Crochet bags are the perfect summer accessory. They won't cause heat exhaustion, even if they are crocheted with 100% wool. They seamlessly transition to fall and winter. And because you don't have to worry about whether they will fit or not, they are a brilliant way to try a new stitch or technique.

If you are looking for a bag that will stand out in a crowd, I recommend making a colorwork bag. Crochet totes with lots of colors have several advantages. They will coordinate with a variety of outfits, they will most certainly garner compliments, and they are invigorating to crochet. Here are some of my favorite colorwork techniques:

If you have never tried colorwork before, might I suggest a felted bag? Felted bags do not have to be done in colorwork, but if you are new to working with multiple colors, the process of felting the fabric will hide mistakes you may make. Be sure to choose colors with a lot of contrast. Without the stitch definition, which is hidden in the process of felting, it is the colors and the design that will showcase your work.

Tunisian Crochet in the Round

As with felting, Tunisian crochet in the round does not have to be worked in multiple colors. However, the technique of working the forward pass with the front hook of the crochet hook and the return pass, at the same time, with the back hook of the crochet hook, makes this a relatively easy form of Tunisian colorwork. The finished fabric is wonderfully thick and sturdy, and the resulting bag has a beautiful Fair Isle quality.

Tapestry Crochet

A classic technique for colorwork bags is tapestry crochet. Worked in single crochet, tapestry crochet is created by working single crochet stitches over the unused color, hiding it from view and eliminating stranding on the wrong side while creating incredible designs. This technique also creates a sturdy fabric, perfect for shopping bags and totes.

If your bag is already finished and you still want to add a pop of color, try embellishing it with flowers and a bit of embroidery.
