Choosing the Perfect Travel Project

May is almost over and June is just around the corner. What does that mean for me? Well the suitcases are coming out of the closet, and I'm filling up my gas tank. It's time for a vacation. And the most important item to pack is a good travel project. Whether you are in a car for 6 hours or on a plane for 3, a good crochet project can make travel time seem to fly. So what makes a good travel project?

Large projects require large amounts of yarn and take up a lot of room in your bags. And what makes crochet time more satisfactory than completing a project. On trips I love to work on projects that I can finish and wear immediately. Those around are always impressed to watch you work on a project and they admire the finished project. I have had my eye on the Tatiana's Earrings and Cuff. This stunning crocheted jewelry ensemble could easily be finished on a long trip.

An easily memorized pattern can be relaxing and minimize mistakes as the conversation with travel companions flows. I look for projects with repeated instructions in uncomplicated stitches. Simple crocheted hats, scarves, and amigurumis often use pattern repeats. The Beatrice's Scarf uses a beautiful repeat to create lacy scallops. And this scarf would make a marvelous spring accessory.

But the most important factor when choosing a project is appeal. It's never fun to work on a project you are not in love with. I love the simple tapestry crochet construction and spring colors make the Spring Market Bag. Plus you can fill the bag on your return trip when packing space is at its premium. Even with its more complicated pattern, the Dragonfly Shawl (below) uses a pattern repeat and diagram-and wouldn't it look elegant with a little black dress on a spring evening.
