Catch Up with the Floating KAL

Let the Interweave Knits Winter 2024 issue transport you to a winter wonderland of cozy knits! This remarkable edition features 14 extraordinary projects to immerse yourself in the uniqueness of specially crafted yarns.

We hope you’ve been enjoying the Floating KAL we’re hosting over on Interweave+ (not sure what we’re talking about? Find all the details here; you have until October 15, 2021 to download your free patterns!). As we enter the final weeks, it’s time for a status update: who’s on team hat, and who’s on team scarf? And how many finished projects do we have?

Team Hat

The Floating Spiral Hat by designer Owen Biesel is a quick knit, even with all the cables. Worked in bulky-weight yarn (Debbie Bliss Donegal Luxury Tweed Aran), the unique offset cable pattern keeps the knitting interesting without being complicated.

Joni’s cute neighbors Raelyn and younger sister Ellie model her finished hat.

The hat starts with a tubular cast-on—a detail that really elevates the entire hat. If you’re new to tubular cast-ons, check out the photo tutorial Joni, our senior project editor, shared in the KAL discussion

Stephanie has a finished hat (and is looking quite smug about it)!

Joni and Stephanie have both finished their hats (and may be working on multiples—these make great gifts!). But how are things going on team scarf?

Team Scarf

Two Interweavers decided to tackle the Floating Zigzag scarf, designed specifically for this KAL by none other than Joni, our senior project editor. The Floating Zigzag Scarf uses the same offset cable motif as the hat but reverses the direction of the cables as they zigzag their way up the scarf. Both our assistant editor Julia and content director Tammy have cast on and are cranking out those cables.

Pro Tip: Julia suggests not starting three other projects at the same time as your KAL.

Scarves are admittedly a larger undertaking than hats, so it’s not surprising that progress on team scarf is a little slower.

Tammy has completed the first cable section. PS: This is her first time knitting cables! She’s doing so well!

Are you knitting along with us? Swing on by the KAL discussion forum and say hello! We’d love to see photos of your project. And remember, you can still join fun—both patterns are free to download until October 15, 2021. We can’t wait to see what you make!

This knit-along is possible thanks to our generous sponsors at LoveCrafts!
