What's the Easiest Stitch?

What's the easiest off-loom beading stitch?

That seems like a straightforward question, doesn't it? In fact, as you're reading this, you've probably already filled in the answer with . . . . what? Tubular herringbone?

This past week, I've had several readers ask me about getting started with off-loom beadweaving. One reader in particular asked, "What's the easiest stitch?"

This week's featured project, Ladder Ring

I'm stumped. There are stitches that seem easier than others. Ladder stitch, used in the Ladder Rings project, is one of those. But easiest? I'm not sure if there is one answer to that question. The first stitch taught in Getting Started with Seed Beads by Dustin Wedekind is daisy chain, while Mastering Beadwork by Carol Huber Cypher begins with peyote. Is daisy chain or peyote the easiest stitch?

Or maybe it's square stitch? One person who tried to teach me beadweaving decided that square stitch was absolutely the easiest stitch in the world and that's what I should start with. She was positively dumbfounded that the square-stitched square that I was making turned into a triangle. How could I mess up the world's easiest stitch?

I realize this is subjective, based on your own background and experience. If you've come from the embroidery world and read lots of charts, then it's easier for you to understand the idea of working a charted peyote stitch pattern. If you already know how to crochet, chances are, you'll find bead crochet a snap. And how you learned that stitch will probably influence your feelings of it being easy or not. (I'm still not that fond of square stitch.) Still, it seems like a question worth trying to answer.

What do you think is the easiest stitch? Take this quick poll. I'll let you know the results on Friday.

Do you bead crochet? I'm looking for examples of bead crochet by Beading Daily members. Please send me links to your website, blog, or Etsy store where you have photos of your work in bead crochet, crochet jewelry, or crochet pieces embellished with beads. I need to receive your information by Friday, September 21, 2007. Thanks!

Michelle Mach is the editor of Beading Daily. Daisy chain turned out to be the easiest stitch for her. (Sorry, square stitch fans!)
