New Year's Resolution: Buy More Crystals, Wear More Crystals!

Rock crystal beaded necklace
I've always had an affinity for natural rock crystals.

A couple of weeks ago, I sat down and took stock of my beading goals for 2012 with a few New Year's beading resolutions. But then once I started looking over my sketchbooks and designs, I realized that I might benefit from another New Year's resolution or two: buy more crystals and wear more crystals!

I've always been attracted to natural crystals. Living just a few hours from New York state's famed Herkimer "diamond" mines and my college classes in geology as an undergraduate provided me with a deep appreciation for organic crystals and their chemical structure. Once I started beading and was introduced to the wonderful world of Swarovski crystals and my favorite bicone-shaped crystal beads, I was totally hooked. I loved the way those tiny beads added just a hint of sparkle to whatever I stitched with them, and now I'm happy to say that I own a respectable assortment of colors of these bicone crystal beads.

For 2012, I want to start using more crystal beads in my designs. The new shapes and colors that are coming from Swarovski and popping up in my favorite beading supply companies are way too tempting, and I can only imagine what I'll see when I get to the Tucson gem and mineral shows in just a couple of weeks. The shapes! The colors! The sparkle! I can already feel my mouth watering with the anticipation of looking over walls of gorgeous crystal beads and crystal stones.

Heading to the post office, the grocery store or the bank? Not with a bit of bling!

So, no problem in collecting and acquiring these beautiful crystal beads, and the design possibilities with crystals are pretty much endless. But wearing them? My my usual daily routines of stacking firewood and feeding chickens don't exactly lend themselves to wearing glamorous accessories. (More like insulated green rubber boots and heavy gloves!) So what's this country mouse to do when it comes to wearing her crystals? Here are a few of my (crazy?) ideas:

  • I've decided to start "dressing" for dinner. Sure, I work from home and I usually work alone most days, so no one really sees what I'm wearing. But once my husband and son come home from work and preschool, why shouldn't I throw on a pretty top and a dazzling necklace for dinner? If it works for England's Royal Family, it works for me.
  • Heading to the grocery store or the post office? Not without a little bit of bling, I'm not! If I have to run errands, I might as well glam it up a bit with a pair of pretty earrings or a funky bracelet full of crystals!
  • Remember those green rubber boots I mentioned earlier? I'm wondering if I could hot-glue a few flat back crystals around the tops. Why not, right? Maybe my chickens could use a little bit sparkle when I head out there in the morning to feed them. Of course, I'd have to be careful not to get too carried away with the flat black crystals, or my family might find that we're eating off of crystal-encrusted dinner plates.
